The reason for this mentality is that the power elite is what truly runs the country. I do not mean the Illuminati, but wealthy, White Anglo-Saxon Protestants own most of the positions of power politically and economically in the United States. Once you actually read up on the real history of the United States, you (and I) can't help but feel that way.
