Interested in how many twists and turns that question takes, what angles the question approached from. Yes I have an opinion.

What has more value: Five whiplashes or ten whiplashes?

My father (of blessed memory, may peace be upon him) told me that pain lets you know that you are alive.

How do you value gravity? Pain is, and it is difficult to consider a world without it.

Let us hear it then. It looks like you might have to be the bold one...the first to step away from the cliches, and address the value of pain. I will come back if this thread actually turns interesting. I think it has great potential, but I am not the bold one today.

You want a serious, honest reply?

No, I don't value pain. Been told all my life it builds character, and while it may be true that hardship builds character, pain just wears you down. People in pain just get smaller all the time.

Yes, I would consider myself to be a masochist.
Sheesh, with the way things are going for me, I ought to change my name to Jesus.
(No, not in a grandiose manner.)

The most important and most valuable things in my life are the things that cause the most pain. Pain can teach a person to recognize their own limits and abilities, the price of investment, and the purpose of forgiveness.

There is a guy named Jesus at my work, and another named Raul.

Really?!? That is soo cool. My old best-buddy in grade school used to say that one day I'd have a lover named Ramone, and another named Raul. Though I must admit, it still hasn't happened. Perhaps one day though I'll have millions and a pool-boi named Phillippe..?..?

Personal opinion, humm tough one actually. How many ways do I approach this, is my question. Am I trying to boil this done to a one. What I'm really doing here is looking for different ways to look at something I have been thinking about for a very long time. There are many many very sharp people here. And some most excellent comments, to me, here already.

Ok, I'll pick one and just one. I do not mean for this to come out as some form of bravado.

I slipped on the ice. It hurt. It hurt so badly I wanted throw up. I had ripped a part in my shoulder. So after I had been attempting to crawl towards the house door, I stopped and "gathered myself together" as much as I could to stand and walk, I had also screwed up my hip. There was also mental anguish happening, which is a form of pain. Normally I would have fallen correctly, a touch of martial arts training and I do know how to fall correctly, but couldn't because I had my hand in my pocket on the side I had slipped. So how do I deal with this pain, well I should have been in the car and on the way to a doctor, but I can be stubborn. I took an aspirin, two actually which is not like me at all. I'm sitting on the couch and my wife is watching me like a hawk and I'm thinking this aspirin is taking far to long to work. So I go into a breathing routine, more to it then that, but let's just call it "centering", I had taught myself and she saw me do it. I moved the pain and said I had, she was curious, but didn't really believe me. So I stood up with no problem, walked over to her and with my ripped up arm, put my hand behind her neck and pulled her head towards my lips and kissed her. I felt no pain doing it. It was a very stupid thing to do, I probably did more damage. Walked back to the couch and noticed something, the walls had moved. Now I was in the same spot I had been before and I also knew the walls hadn't really moved. But they most certainly looked and felt further away, less on top of me. This is nothing I can hold for very long, I'm not that good at it. The aspirin kicked in, finally. It took well over a year for the body part to heal.

I had learned several things. So how do I value that pain, very highly, for a very poor choice of words. But I sure as hell didn't value it very highly at the time.

But again, I have way more perspectives on it then just this one example and I know there are some I haven't thought about. Hence the question.

Being a rather foolhardy 'aspie' gravity has led to a large amount of pain in my life
