Such a heavy handed response would play right into the hands of ISIS and other terrorist organisations.

It might be. I just don't think it will happen. No government that held liberal democracy in high regard would have undermined it by importing such large numbers of fundamentalists, in the first place. I can only conclude that either these governments don't believe in liberal democracy, don't believe it's as important as manufacturing a pretext for something or other, or they are being threatened or bribed to act against their national interests somehow.

This is all very demoralizing.

Early reports are saying the terrorists were homegrown, much like the 7/7 attack in London. The saddest part is that these attacks happen frequently all over the world. There needs to be some way to defuse the hate.

Hello Silver Proteus, I think you are replying to my post but I'm not totally sure.

The French President has described this as 'an act of war' and that 'France will be ruthless in its response to Islamic State.'

Yes, I was replying to your post. Sorry, I should have quoted.

I am aware that the French president said such. While I do think they should be ruthless, I'm just not convinced yet I agree with such actions as they could backfire. I'm lean more towards backstage actions rather than going aiming for decisive physical battles. I think ISIS should be crippled, muted and destroyed, but through other means.

Whatever the world does more people will die. I guess it's a matter of estimating which path will lead to less collateral damage.

I also don't think that ISIS is the threat that people make them out to be. Fear due to small time terrorism can amplify such feelings and lead to bad decisions.

Yes, I don't see a solution in the near future at all.

With the US, Russia, UK and France all involved in offensive actions against the IS, they seem to be playing a game of political golf.

Does anyone actually sit through the whole of these videos full of wittering and faux rage?

Not even slightly tempted to click "play."

The actual news is quite enough at the moment.

The video I linked is very good.

But, yes, I recommend it with large reservations. That guy been accused of trying to set himself up as a cult leader. While, I think that accusation is going a bit far, I can see why a reasonable person might think that's what he's been doing. He's also a Randian libertarian which is not something I share an affinity with. But, he says some true and profound things sometimes, and he seems like he's willing to take a lot of flak for his opinions; so I like his channel, even though I disagree with most of it.

It is AMAZING what you can learn about individuals during a crisis - whom they hate, which conclusions they'll jump to even after the facts are in, which obvious facts they will deny, and whether they are open to reason or are merely reactionary bigots.

My sympathies are with the victims, the survivors, and their families.

My antipathies are against the terrorists, their leaders, and their ideologies.

...

This CNN article agrees with the reports I've been getting from my European contacts via amateur radio.

It was Islamic State terrorists; not Israel, not the Amish, not Christians, not Atheists, and (thank God) certainly not Aspies!

No and yes.

Each to their own.

I know of the video author. I was referring to the video being at least 3 times longer than necessary and the bad acting.

Profound sympathy for the people of France.
