In and of themselves, they won't make much difference to the planet. However, if we manage to get cleaner sources of electric power, e.g. if nuclear fusion becomes feasible any time soon, THEN electric cars will be a much cleaner alternative. Even building more nuclear fission reactors would help in that regard (with better safety measures than in the past!).

Electric cars do have their own issues that need to be resolved, and hopefully will be resolved or at least ameliorated somehow.
