This litigation culture is causing far too much damage.
Lots will agree with you, but
http://www.epi.org/content.cfm/bp174The legal system for adjudicating tort claims in the United States delivers important benefits to the American people. Most notably, these benefits include the compensation of injured persons (including people harmed by giant corporations and other powerful interests), the deterrence of wrongdoing, greater investments in product innovation and safety, and the civilized, non-violent settlement of disputes. These benefits are rarely quantified, and critics generally focus exclusively on the system's costs, whose magnitude and impact they tend to exaggerateStates with "no-fault" insurance systems have higher accident and injury levels than States with some personal liability. It can be shown that litigatgion results in lower accidents, less injuries, less human suffering.
Counter intuitively, litigation is actually a good thing.
Unfortunatley this does not take away Alex's stress and costs from a frivolous/malicious case.
ASSUMING the US system is pretty much the same as ours, if he can convince a court that the claims made against WP have been done malitiously, (i.e. libelous comments made with malice) he may have a case to counter sue IMO. But of course this is not without cost.
If Alex needs to pass the hat around, I will contribute.
Pfftt! A litigious culture (sorry to the certain Swede) does have those benefits, but have you noticed it's usually the one with the most money (ie corporations etc) that wins?
Lemme tell you a little incident, just over 10 years ago. My family went to the USA, and amongst other things, we toured (with an expat tour operator) parts of Los Angeles. Now, we went into this really posh hotel, and this old rich b***h with a dalmation saunters by. My brother tries touching the dalmation, and it bites him. The first thing this old bag screeches is "Has it broken the skin? Has it broken the skin? It's had all it's shots!" Of course, my brother hadn't been given rabies. The dog didn't break the skin. However, that has always stuck in my mind what litigation has done in America....
