The school didn't tell us anything and some parents came periodically through out the day to pick up their kids. I didn't find out what really happened until I got home that night. I remember the fear people had in the days afterward and the coming together people did.
It was the same how I experienced (I was in 7th grade). We had just finished our exercises in gym class when the planes hit. Some of the other students around me, along with some of my friends, were mysteriously talking about planes. At first I thought it was something else, but it was strange why more than one person was talking about it. The school did keep quiet about the whole thing, probably to prevent a panic. After school was over, my mother was mysteriously hitting the gas hard to pick me up, so I thought she was in a hurry. Then she, "I'm so sorry I'm making you hurry. Get inside quick. I had to get your sister home and keep my students from going outside all day." I asked her what was wrong. Turning to me, she panicked, "There were planes that crashed into buildings! They hit the World Trade Center, they hit the pentagon, they were trying to hit the White House, for God's sake!" Driving back home the roads were filled with emergency vehicles parked one by one along the road. We got home and my dad had returned early from work to stay with us, and we all watched the TV (all the channels were interrupted to show the attacks), and I could not believe what I was seeing. It was horrifying.
