I understand that the job problem is more important than the healthcare problem. However, the healthcare blues that America has now will exacerbate FUTURE job woes and threaten American economic competitiveness, because if we do not rein in healthcare costs now, I can envision a future of America falling the way Soviet Union did in the 80's --- structural fiscal problems that prevented it from supporting either the economy or the military --- against a not-so burdened country called C****.

And in addition, much as I loathe the mess in the current Democratic adminstration, I think the prevailing alternative --- that is, no healthcare reforms --- is actually more detrimental to American society as a whole. More and more people, including many of us Aspies, are losing health insurance because we either cannot pay increasing insurance dues, or that our treatments run in higher costs and hence we would have used out all the life insurance payments for our treatments.

I loathe big governments, but I hate the people to suffer more as we are increasingly unable to accept medical treatment. And if traditional low-cost treatment methods can hale the same ailments that we have as before, why not use them, as long as it works we should try them.

So I think the best solution now for the healthcare reform bill is still a single-payer system funded by the people, through the extension of Medisave or other similar schemes to all, but there should be conditions attached to ensure that the whole system is financially sustainable while ensuring that Americans are as free from life-threatening and life-restricting ills. And, if necessary, America should scale back unnecessary military commitment that are not really effectiveagainst the current state of non-state terrorism AND economic tussles.

Add this in. Abortion should not be funded by governmental dollars, this will be an exception to what's above because abortion means murder!

Look at the Post Office ("It's on track this year for an operating loss of between $6 billion and $12 billion, debt surpassing $10 billion, and a $1 billion cash shortfall" writes Fortune magazine), DMV, Amtrak. Meanwhile government run GM is showing a loss while private sector competitor Ford is showing profits., Medicare and Medicaid are running in the red, and worst of all social security is going to be out of cash by about 2020. All these points say the Government cannot run anything properly. Their experience and track record prove it. If someone handed you their resume with this much fail would you hire them? I wouldn't!

I DON'T want the Goverment to run health care. It needs to be a private sector thing. There are ways to reduce costs. First and foremost with tort reform! This change alone would help rid the system of ridiculous law suits that plague doctors everywhere. Next by removing the ban on interstate health care insurance this will open up literally thousands of low cost options because now all health care providers can compete nationally with each other. Increasing the transparency of hospital fees and coverage will empower people with the knowledge to make informed decisions about which provider they should purchase. These are just three ways to keep costs affordable. There are many others!

We already have a form of tort reform, it’s called "either you sign away your rights to a see a mediator instead of a jury or the doctor won’t see you".

I'm not a party person but I feel this guy's ideas are right on track. I mean when I get into a financial pinch I create a budget to keep my expenses low. Sounds like they'd like to do the same. Instead of this MASSIVE new health care thing... why not try these four ideas for a year and see what happens? I think that would be the smart thing to do.

The Republican Reading room...

There's a video stream of a large group reading and trying to understand the 1,990 page bill.

So you're opposed to a la carte government? You prefer someone picking out a huge glob of groceries for you instead of being able to pick and choose each item?

No I’m opposed to losing the bird in hand in an effort to catch two in the bush and winding up with neither the bird in hand nor the two in the bush like we did in 1994.

Well, 1994 was good. I loved that.

Yeah, you're right on this. So we just need to use one form of universal healthcare by all for all... and the hospitals should be private. I didn't mention public hospitals because I find them ridiculous and redundant, but public money for private hospitals, as long as the hospitals strive to maximise profits by lowering costs (but with governmental regulations to keep profits at a manageable level)...

Fairly clear you haven't read it either, it does nothing of the sort.

You're 17 years old. You haven't lived long enough to know what the heck you're talking about. Wait about 10 years, then come back and have an intelligent comment.

When I was 17, I couldn't wait to get out of the hands of my parents and attain independence. Then I left home, straight into the entangling embrace of mama government. So much for getting loose from apron strings.

Seriously. Read it. They have done the math. The cite their sources. They make sense.

http://www.pnhp.org/facts/singlepayer_faq.php

The United States has the most bureaucratic health care system in the world. Over 31% of every health care dollar goes to paperwork, overhead, CEO salaries, profits, etc. Because the U.S. does not have a unified system that serves everyone, and instead has thousands of different insurance plans, each with its own marketing, paperwork, enrollment, premiums, and rules and regulations, our insurance system is both extremely complex and fragmented.

The Medicare program operates with just 3% overhead, compared to 15% to 25% overhead at a typical HMO. Provincial single-payer plans in Canada have an overhead of about 1%.

It is not necessary to have a huge bureaucracy to decide who gets care and who doesn’t when everyone is covered and has the same comprehensive benefits. With a universal health care system we would be able to cut our bureaucratic burden in half and save over $300 billion annually.
