Louisiana & oil spill
Ixtoc has reduced marine life in Texas, still. When the base of the life chain suffers, the rest does not come back.
Ixtoc at 140 million gallons over a year, Deepwater Horizon, 100 to 200 million gallons in six weeks.
If it takes as long to stop this one, we are looking at a Billion Gallon Event.
While it is true that the Deccan Plateu and the Siberian Traps did not end life, they did end 98 and 99% of it. the K/T Extinction did not end life, just most forms, and 50 million years later, Mammals!
Nowhere that ever had an oil spill recovered. They survived, but at a much lower level, and stayed there.
Fishing and shrimping are over, first because they will die, second because they will not be fit to eat, and third because they need time to recover, hundreds of years. That was $3.5 billion a year. That supported tens of billions in boats, seafood processors, and produced most of the employment along our coast,
People who owned their own boat, hired crew, do not seek any other job, it is all they know, and they have been doing it for five generations. Unlike farmers, they can not just go buy another farm, they were part of the Gulf.
Is British Petrolum going to pay for our $100,000,000,000 loss? That is what twenty years would cost, how about hundreds?
I am only talking about fishing, the land will also be damaged. So far a little along the breachs, but when the first hurricane comes, they will be saturated. In all other spillls, much smaller, twenty or thirty years later they is still oil just beneath the surface. Clean it up, dispose of the oily sand, the next storm will replace it. We used to restore our beaches by dredging offshore sand, that will no longer work.
This oil will be filling the Gulf Stream for years, around Florida, up to Cape Hatteras, then offshore, killing fisheries as it goes. A lot of it will wind up in the North Sea.
This is a crime, not an accident. British Petrolum has over 700 violations of US law, Exxon has 1.
This was caused by unsafe practices, by a company with the worst track record in the industry.

Take a good look at the Katrina Recovery. Over 200,000 still displaced, half the city in ruin and rot, and a few politically connected people taking all the money.
Most of the money went into the Public Employees Retirement Fund.
Anyway, the disaster has not happened yet. That comes after the hurricane, when this is spread deep inland.
When oil goes to the surface it evaporates, the use of dispersants stopped this, so what comes onshore is toxic waste, something no human should live in.
Like Love Canal, that town that oiled the roads with Dioxen, the whole area will be unfit for human life.
This is not a one time event, it will continue to spew up on land for decades.
The boats that were laying booms and doing cleanup were called off because the crews were getting sick, the same for beach cleanup crews, New Orleans is a hole in the ground surrounded by levees, and mostly below sea level, everything heavier than air sinks into this hole.
We confine crude oil in pipelines, tanks, for the stuff is lethal.
The situation is, the Gulf is filled with globs of oil floating below the surface. Divers report six and eight inch globs, everywhere, all the way to the bottom. When a storm surge pushes that on land, the oil will stick to the first thing it touches. When the water leaves, the oil stays, and then will evaporate.
Air quality will be off the EPA scale for human exposure. Evacuate for the hurricane, and never be allowed to return.
I am packing everything I want to keep.
Katrina wasn't an official recovery act, was it? Wasn't it mainly FEMA and insurance claims?
As for the oil evaporating, is that really good, having the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons evaporating into the atmosphere? They cause respitory distress and are already causing sickness in workers. I don't know which is worse, that or the use of dispersants...
It has been said this will be the Gulf's Love Canal and might change the country's attitude toward oil the way Love Canal changed the attitude concerning nuclear energy. This might push us into a cleaner energy future, but will that necessitate a nuclear energy revival?
The gusher is getting worse and coming up through other places on the sea floor because the pipe has broken far down the shaft.
The latest estimate is that the pressure could be between 20,000 psi and 70,000 psi. Plus they seem to have hit the "mother lode". Imagine all the oil that has ever been pumped out of Texas for the last hundred years coming up all at once.
But wait, it gets worse! Russian scientists say that a lot of really nasty chemicals can evaporate into the atmosphere and come down over land as acid rain which could destroy all plant life in the eastern half of America.
But don't worry. Their last line of defense is to drill a counter-shaft and let off a small atom bomb
That would either seal the shaft or crack the rock strata and make the problem a thousand times worse..
This disaster isn't over. It has barely started. If/when the oil makes its way into the Gulf Stream then the Icelanders and the Europeans can expect to see oil on their beaches within a few months.
In a stunning move, nothing happened over the weekend, except a few more million gallons flowed into the Gulf.
British Petroleum discovered the boat they were putting oil in was almost full. Capturing more has been put on hold for they would have to sell what they recover, and that would affect the world price of crude.
Now they want to burn it, so it is not forced onto the market. It could expose the fact that the oil companies make a good profit at $10 a barrel, with gas under $1 a gallon.
Obama and friends want all the money to go through their pockets, $20 Billion, and they will say who has a real claim to it. First on their list come the poor Public Employees, who need their retirement fully funded. Their investments in British Petroleum have faired poorly.
British Petroleum plead guilty to felony mass murder in Texas City, and paid over $100 Million in fines, now they have become a serial mass murderer, and crime profilers say they will never stop once the pattern starts.
Halliburton has turned States Evidence. Industry procedure is to case the hole as drilled, which is often damaged by the drill string spinning free for several miles, then after removing the drill string, inserting a smaller liner, cement between, giving an undamaged seal from top to bottom, British Petroleum skipped that phase.
Halliburton submitted a plan to place 21 cement seals between the casing and the production pipe. The method is to inflate a ring seal, pump cement on top, some twenty foot, and Halliburton thought 21 were needed to seal the pressure, British Petroleum went with six.
After cement the mud is cycled, pumped to the bottom, through the production pipe, to see if gas bubbles have formed, a dangerous condition. Coming up through the mud they can be bled off and controlled, British Petroleum skipped this step.
The next test is pumping out the mud between the production pipe and the casing, above the cement seals, and gas shows leaking seals, British Petroleum skipped this step.
They then ordered all the mud pumped out and replaced with water, before the cement had time to fully set, and the well blew through the six seals.
At every step British Petroleum showed that they were not oil men, but a London based Investment Banker that invested in oil. They have no staff, they hire out Geology, drilling, well services, and are Goldman Sachs running Atomic Power, building on the cheap, shorting the securities, and buying double insurance.
British Petroleum went cheap, self insured, and has made billions drilling sub prime wells in Ex-Colonies. Britian is funding their Public Employee Retirements on it, and now the Head of Goverrment, and The Mayor of London, are calling us Anti-Empireists and Britophobes. The Queen said, "We are not amused."
They are also making the claim that the American Division is another Corporation, which the Parent Corporation is not liable for.
They do not have the technology or the knowhow to stop this well, yet insist they are in charge.
They lie and put out misinformation.
Industry experts have said that the relief well plan will not work, before the oil was in motion, pressure blew past 23,000 foot of water, SG 1, six cement seals, and the plan to inject 8,000 foot of mud, SG 2, into and oil jet, is hopeless. The most likely outcome is a worse blowout.
The only hope of stopping this is drilling many wells into the production strata and plugging the strata. Drilling mud is twice as dense as water, coming up 18,000 feet it may hold back the pressure.
Injecting Liquid Nitrogen into the strata will freeze everything solid, for long enough to plug the hole.
This is not a job for London Investment Bankers, or the US Government, This is a job for Oil Men, and we have the rigs and crews to do the job.
American Oil Men, Crews, Rigs, and Know how.
Blowout the Harvard Suits, let's get working!.

Random question here...
If I wer to dump a drum of used motor oil in front of BP building or the White House; I would get arrested so how is it that BP can dump all this & still have there executives walking free & still have em running the show
If people wer to start dumping oil as part of a political defenestration; would it be protected by Freedom of Protest
I think it's totally wrong that a company can do all this damage but an individual cant even toss a klenex out a car window without risk of a ticket ![]()

The answer is: Oil is what fuels our economy. It's true. As much as you hate BP and what they did, they wouldn't be doing it at all if we didn't have such an insatiable appetite for petrolium products and crude.
As much as you might hate President Obama (lots do), you have to admit, he does have a solid point about phasing out some of the oil dependency and replacing it with clean energy technology. It could be the next Silicon Valley experience, with all these new clean energy jobs being created. Engineers could sink their teeth into discovering new technologies. There's a lot of progress to be made. We can't even invision it now because oil holds us back and keeps us from thinking.
There will still be drilling jobs since oil won't be entirely phased out for many years to come, so no need to hit the panic button,.
Clean energy is a myth. Wind and solar could replace some coal burning, at a higher price.
As for transport, trains, trucks, cars, oil has become more important through globalization. Add ships to the transport.
As for being held back, eighty years ago the answer was dam the rivers, and the power would be free,
Then it was Atomic, so cheap that no meters would be needed. Both turned out to be expensive, and left long term problems, rivers killed, and Three Mile Island, Chernoble.
Coal produces Acid Rain, and Mercury buildup. Waste products build up.
Natural gas is the cleanest fuel we have, and there is a lot of it. Deep water holds vast amounts of Methane Hydrates, it is the cleanest new fuel around.
Oil produces a lot more than power, Plastics, the Chemical Industry, Asphalt for roads.
A hunded years ago most cities were heated by burning coal in each building, air quality was bad, as there might also be a steel mill in town. Changing to oil cleaned up what had been a several hunderd year growing problem. Before that it was wood, and that changed the land, forests were cleared, till turning to coal was the only answer.
Lighting and lubrication came from Whale Oil.
Petroleum is a lot better than what it replaced.
We are not the cause of British Petroleum, it was not our market that lead to this, but their greed, failing to follow industry practices, and only bribes can explain why they were not inspected.
As for new sources of clean energy, we have heard that story many times, Clean Coal still strip mines, and leaves waste products. Atomic Energy, we are still storing all the waste, and will be forever.
Electric cars get recharged with dirty power, and produce their own battery waste. It is short range, half of all the energy is lost, batteries are 50%, and produce more total waste than gas.
Hydrogen is hard to store, explosive, and has to be produced. Fuel Cells are not cheap overall.
Solar means paying for twenty years of power first, having big batteries, Lead and Sulphuric Acid, and being your own electrical engineer.
None of it has the power for heavy hauling of Diesel, for trucks, trains, ships, there is no other option.
Technology has increased the demand for power. My computer has been on for years. The same for my printers, and recharging the laptop.
We do waste a lot of energy, while I will buy the energy saving model, I also want the oversize flat screen monitor. We have better building codes, but most houses were built long ago, and the new houses are two and three times as large.
Energy use per person only goes up.
Every saving leads to more use.
Just in the last decade, energy has gotten much cheaper.
There is a thousand years of clean energy in Methane Hydrates waiting off shore.
Japan has launched satellites to collect and beam down solar power.
Tesla said that Supercooled underground power transmission was the way to go, near zero loss, but our grid was cheaper to build, and the loss of a quarter to half of all power produced was considered minor.
The place to start is at the top, The Vested Interests in Rails, Power Production, Transmission, and nothing is stopping a National Energy and Transport Grid, except Private Monopolies.
High Speed Rail is a threat to Airlines, Trucking, and a National Power Grid to the people who own the existing one.
The Automobile made of Steel is the problem, fuel use per pound over the life of the vehicle is high. There are much better materials now, but Dupont bought General Motors as a captive user of their paints, plastics, and the Steel Industry did the same. We now import the steel, so cars need a paint job, to keep Dupont making money.
Much lighter and tougher cars can be made from Carbon, never need paint, and weigh much less, and use less fuel.
Overall, our energy useage could be reduced by half, but only if we get rid of those industries that have been bribing Congress for a hundred years.
One is Oil, not the unsafe British petroleum, but all who produce our oil, it should not be theirs, but ours.
British Petroleum spent $100,000,000 and the field is going to produce 50,000,000 barrels. So why are they getting our oil for $0.50 a barrel?
If oil is a National problem, we should pay the $100,000,000 a hole, and keep safety first. Just drilling a grid pattern over the Gulf, with pipelines, all of the reserves would be available for our needs, not for some London Investment Bankers to sell on the world market.
When the President starts talking about solutions he will have listeners. A National Government with a National Plan.
What Obama said is the British petroleum damages must go first to the Governments of the States, First Responders, like the Local Police and Fire Departments are going to do anything. A loss of tax income to Government seems his first priority, and lining up votes for the Fall.
He compares it to putting a man on the Moon? Where is the response, where is the all out move to plug the leak?
Nothing said has worked, the oil flow has been upgraded four times, from, 42,000 to 2,500,000 gallons a day. He is still taking British Petroleum's word about a relief well on a few months?
Industry Experts, including British Petroleum, say it is a maybe, but it could make it a lot worse.
The only sure answer is drilling many wells into the producing strata, and reducing the pressure.
That should have started day one, for this well is out of control, and could very well wash out around the casing and become an oil volcano.
Causing the worst disaster ever should void any lease, this is an American Government problem.
Obama promises cleanup, making things better than ever. The oil now covers the area of several States, in water over a mile deep, up to the surface, and coating the bottom. How does he propose cleaning that up?
The first hurricane will push it inland, where it will stay. How will you clean all surfaces of our inland waters, marshes, swamps?
Why activate 17,000 National Guard? Give each a sponge and a bucket? Or is it for population control when everyone is told they must leave?
This was not caused by consumers, it was Grvernment Regulated Producers. It has nothing to do with Global Warming, Carbon Tax, Cap and Trade, it is a disaster, and needs to be dealt with now.
It is said Nero played music and sang as he watched Rome burn, for he was in love with the sound of his own voice, and he also had a plan of rebuilding before the fire, when him and rich friends would replace the burned city with private gardens, palaces, and Government backed Monopolies.
Now we are looking at decades when only the oil companies will have access to the Gulf, for cleanup.
For a one time cost they get rid of all other useage, and the only answer is to extract all the oil.
At Harvard they teach you to think big.
Clean energy will be a reality one day, because the oil is not going to last forever and with China and India gearing up, it will go even quicker. Now is the time to develop alternative fuel sources. Solar and wind are in their infancy. We need the engineers to do more with those as well as carbon and hydrogen. One day, ground crude will be a thing of the past, by necessity. There just won't be any around. By then, we might be able to engineer our own oil and fill in the gap left by other fuel sources, which will be miniscule compared to what we use now.
We will still need petroleum as a chemical feed stock for complex polymers. But we won't need nearly as much as do when we burn the stuff. Also petroleum is still the lubricant of choice.
ruveyn

ruveyn
That might be true right now, Ruvey, but we haven't had a chance to study this and come up with carbon cycle replication, super conductor technology, advanced wind structuring, complex solar redistribution. These fields have the potential for growth, just like nanobots will catapult the development of complex droidal units (CDUs).
I know this will one day be a reality.
Geothermal is a biggie, clean, endless, and could replace coal. It is being held back because some people bought a lot of coal rights from their government friends.
It does not take the far future to have an Energy Plan, it only takes going around the existing energy plan.
The problem is not energy, there is a lot, it is the marketing network, and their hold on Congress.
