Putin is using a very old Russian trick to perform landgrabs. He's doing the same here as what Russia did to the Chinese Mongolia territory in the 1920s.

Bribed and corrupted local officials in a large border region which was financially dependent to Russia; bribed and corrupted the highest gov. officials of the country and then proceeded to engineer an economic crisis that leads to civil unrest. To protect the 'Russian interests and people' in the border region Russia stations a small amount of troops... the local people then hold referendums to get their soviet-backed independence...they get it... and years later that region 'asks' to join Russia.

A nifty little landgrab.

Crimea will certainly end up a puppet independent state of Russia for about 5 to 10 years and then, finally, it will ask to join Russia.

I think it will be much sooner. Referendum is done, I think they will be part of Russia within a few weeks.

Sounds like Russian troops are poised to invade Ukraine at any time now, according to CNN. Putin has since been booted out of the G8 summit - that'll show him!

CNN needs map reading skills. They said the Russians were on the border and ready to invade Transnitsia, a non Ukraine country on the other side of Ukraine. The border is the same as always, "Russians post Border Guards on the Russian Border!"

There are border posts at some major roads, but the rest of the border does not even have a fence, and Russian farms touch Ukraine farms.

Why should the Russians invade and take part, when the next election will give them the whole country?

The Acting Government becomes less popular by the day, the Ukraine is beyond broke, and their own army refuses to defend against Mother Russia.

More evidence is coming out about how it was known that Sobota, the Social Nationalists did shoot, the police, army, and the protestors. The same as happened in Syria.

I doubt this Acting Government will survive till the May 25 election.

Hm, they had said on CNN that the Ukrainian army was getting droves of new volunteers to fight for their country.

It's Svodoba not Sobota. Svoboda means freedom in Russian. Sobota sounds like Saturday in Russian to me. I don't think that it would work as a neo-nazi party title.

The acting government is ignored by the army, What they did was form a new group, The National Guard, made up of Kiev street fighters. They claimed 20,000. They are more the fighters of a Political Party, than a national defense.

Svodoba was a small minority party, polling 6%, who took over by force, and are now forming up as Brownshirts, the street fighters of politics.

This was not the expected outcome of the deal brokered by France, Germany, Russia. A broken deal is no deal at all.

The US does seem to have supported one faction over all, the one that took over.

The outcome, Europe has to buy American gas, because Russia is bad. Russia is also a very large trade partner with Europe, America wants the market, so Europe gets problems.

Europe does know that if it comes to the worst, they become Syria in this game.

While America must have some good points, the future is deals with Brazil, Russia, India, China, BRICS, which all have rising economies.

The Ukraine is a $150 Billion dollar economic pit, getting worse at $15 Billion a year, and that plus the cost of defense is being put on Europe. Europe does not want them in the EU, or NATO. One, they would all move to France and collect welfare, and Two, there would be no incentive to fix their own den of thieves government in Ukraine.

In twenty years of freedom, the Ukraine has sunk into debt at $7.5 Billion a year, and now the interest on the debt is $9 Billion, and they are sinking faster. It was an experiment that did not work.

It worked as an administrative district for the CCCP, where some spoke Polish, some Hungarian, some Ukraine, and the majority Russian. It was a loser, but a good pipeline right of way to southern Europe.

Cutting Russia out of the deal sends Europe into long term depression, economic, before the endless border war starts. France and Germany have tried War on the Eastern Front.

Up intil the neo nazi takeover in Ukraine, the EU was well intergrated with the Russian economy. Their American investments cost them big time, but their Russian investments paid off. Russia kept the gas and oil flowing, drove Europe's manufacturing economy, and offered endless resources from the worlds largest country. America sold them bonds that became worthless.

Europe is in play and they know it.

I agree. And I will also say that in order to supply Europe, the US will have to beef up production domestically. Even if the Obama administration can convince the American public through propaganda that new drilling is required the only ones that will benefit are the oil companies. The increase production will all go to Europe and not alleviate growing domestic gas prices at all. Furthermore, any increase in taxes generated by the sales will go to military spending to deal with this so-called Russian crisis that Washington is shoving down our throats. This entire fabricated situation is a lose-lose proposition for the common people of the entire world.

On a slightly different note, if it weren't so sad, it would be comical that you can't show a swastika in Europe. Yet European governments think nothing of installing a Nazi government in a neighboring country.

There has been tons of protest against that behavior of US government. Take your blinders off as well.

Let me add to this. Why is the world up in arms about Russia putting troops in Crimea when they all sat idly by while 1 million Tutsi people were butchered with machetes over a period of three months in Rwanda? I guess politics takes precedence over genocide in the civilized world. Especially when it's brown people being butchered.
[/quote] For US people there might not be much difference between Ruanda and Ukraine, but if you are living in europe, thats directly in your neighborhood and you will most likely know Ukrainians yourself or may have gone there already for bathing-holidays, so that crisis simply becomes much more real to people, then hearing bad news from a place you only know from theory to exist.

Just like stuff happening in Mexico, might not be that relevant for europeans, but will have much more impact in US news and politics.

It still is. Gazprom is still keeping European houses warm. You can't put a new gas pipeline overnight.

Now, Steven Seagal has not only gone to Russia to train Putin's army (I know, WTF), but he is now even threatening to renounce his American citizenship for citizenship in Russia. All this because Putin is his buddy, and he thinks Obama ought to be impeached.
I say, let Putin keep that fat has-been.

It is heating up in the east with three Oblasts having taken over public buildings, protesters in the streets, all along the Russian border. It was the stronghold of the last elected President, and it has been said he has returned.

It is Kiev style politics, on a regional level.

Gazprom has raised the rates twice, just as Kiev doubled the rates. Now Kiev wants Europe to send gas back down the pipelines, owned by Gazprom, to supply Ukraine. This at the same time gas is flowing to Southern Europe. Maybe Europe could mail them some gas. Ukraine has not been making any payments on the gas that Russia has contiinued to supply.

The Ukraine owes $11 Billion to Russia, $150 Billion to the IMF, has Bonds coming due, and is broke. They seem to be making money out of paper and ink, to meet payrolls, pensions, and the army, but like most of eastern Europe, their money does not travel out of the country. Russia has stopped buying from four very large dairys, so at least the Ukraines can drink milk, lots of milk.

Russia has been selling oil in Dollars, but offered to take Euros, and Europe accepted. The Iran to Russia gas pipeline is finished, and Rusia is closing a deal to supply China, for the next thirty years, and they do not demand dollars, Yuan, or gold, the Chinese accepted.

This will be a blow to the Petrodollar, and the IMF loansharking. Everyone will be dumping Dollars and US Bonds.

This is two failures in a row, Syria has turned the tide of war and is mopping up the terrorists, and the West's takeover of Ukraine has lead to a breakup of the country, and maybe a lot more. It was not done in Europe's best interest. The NSA, and The State Department, said F**k Europe.

Russia is the resource rich area between Europe and China, and a high speed rail line connecting the two would change world trade. Not only Russia, but Iran, Iraq, offers long term energy supplies.

Europe has some thinking to do.

As Putin is threatening the government in Kiev not to move militarily against the Pro-Russian protestors demanding that eastern Ukraine be ceded Russia, Ukraine believes the Russians are planning another massive land grab. That's especially true if the Ukrainians are correct in saying that the Russians are in fact the puppet masters behind these violent protests.

USA can't afford to push Putin. Russia provides a safe route to Afghanistan for US troops. The alternative is via Pakistan. Europe needs Russian gas. Russia does its gas sales with US dollar but if Putin said he was happy to take any currencies, this would threaten the dollar hegemony that the USA relies on. Maintaining the value of the dollar is important for US economic stability. Its ironic that Russia as the collapsed soviet empire is so much more economically solvent than the USA. It is this that underpins the changing geopolitical landscape. The USA is secretly very worried about its energy supplies and seeks to secure the remaining oil reserves (potential or actual). Some will contest this and quote shale oils but to my mind the fracking of oil shales is a sign of desperation rather the energy self sufficiency.

Personally, I believe we are in the end game of peak oil and I am deeply fearful of what desperate energy hungry super powers might do as the fight to the death over the remaining energy reserves. I'm a little worried that Russia and the USA might just go head-to-head on this occasion. If they don't, I'm wondering when they will go head-to-head, not if.
