How can people be so brutal with refugees, really?

Isn't there a huge NATO garrison in Estonia the UN could allocate towards enforcing the Geneva convention here? I'm guessing Russia can't possibly be to pleased about Hungary anyway...

The biggest problem I see with that is how Estonia is hardly a neighbor of Hungary, and so I doubt the countries in between probably would look kindly to having UN troops marching across their territories.
And actually, I believe the Hungarian President is snuggling up to Putin these days, as Putin is also a fascistic nationalist. I imagine Putin would be welcoming any opportunity to drive a wedge between the US and any of our European allies (in this case, Hungary).

Though I strongly doubt Putin would risk pissing off Azerbaijan...

Poland has refused, the Baltic States have refused, no transit, no settlement.

This European Union has run into States Rights.

The block that is objecting is the old Warsaw Pact Countries.

Russia sits back laughing, saying, I told you so.

Hey, Russia is having problems persuading people to take jobs in Siberia. Maybe they could issue work visas to any Syrians willing to go there. Then again, maybe not, given their experience with Chechens.

People are going to be even less happy about Germany once they realise the consequences of their current policy will be. 800,000 asylum spaces would go a long way to giving Lebanon back to the Lebanese - if Britain and France helped out as well (we *might* be able to take 300k without many problems, maybe France would take 400k), we could dismantle the refugee camps there.

But no, those crossing the Med have to take priority...

On this, Cameron > Merkel.

Europe can only take so many refuges and even that is only putting a temporary albeit very costly patch on a bigger problem. That problem being the reason for the refugees being refugees in the first place. What about the next time when there are millions of refugees?

Germany, mostly likely under residual guilt from the holocaust, has agreed to take 800,000 but will probably end up with more before the fat lady sings. What I see as a possibility sometime in the future is a disaster over there. With this "we'll take anyone" policy they are unwittingly creating a climate for Germany's national mood and potentially the government to change dramatically with a potential outcome with at least similarities to what they had circa 1933-45.
If it happened before there's no reason to believe it can't happen again.

The reality is that there are probably 2 billion people who would move to 'the West' right now if given the chance, it's not a sustainable policy. You are destroying the QOL of the working and underclass, you can talk about your ancestors but your ancestors weren't immigrating to a country with modern infrastructure, public services, welfare.

Because the Hungarians are probably as faithless regarding fellow humans as Raptor up there; history repeats itself in that manner when everybody thinks it's best to build walls and gloss over inconvinience or recessions vis a vis the suffering of others.

The next time when there are millions of refugees how on earth would they all follow the same journeys? Did they not know how to build housing and grow food in their home countries?

Change your source of news. But I warn you - you may find it hard to find a differing opinion in the UK media.

Mootoo wrote:
It's like, literally, Germany and the UK changed sides from WWII... the former has taken the most refugees, the UK is on the brink of suggesting concentration camps for them. (No, I seriously wouldn't be surprised if this 'Eton' cabinet suggests it... ugh... and no one can suggest that this isn't a brutal consensus when children are dying in the back of some truck and left to rot...)
It is easy to criticise other countries when you live in one of the richest countries in Europe. Get down to their level, live as they live, eat as they eat, feel as they feel and most important of all - have that problem yourself. Because thanks to the UK decision I suppose no one is yet storming your house to get into.

Interview with inhabitant of the Greek island Lesbos:

Each country has different economy and problems and therefore has its own right to decide whether to take refugees or not. Not every country can afford it. And for many it could destabilise the country. Following the example of Poland, as someone here mentioned Poland - this country has minimum 8 million citizens living in poverty (around quarter of population), the rest lives bad too: utilities are the most expensive in all Europe, prices are comparable to UK while the minimum pay is less than £200/m and average pay £400/m. In only recent years 2 million of its own citizens migrated to western Europe escaping poverty. This country pumped billions from own budget to Ukraine to help them fight Russian invasion. This country took and still takes refugees from conflicted Ukraine, as well as issues passports to Polish ancestors fleeing war in the east. They also took in a few thousand Syrian refugees this year, given them houses and social income that most Poles cannot afford working. This country's intelligence agencies are unprepared and oblivious to threats coming along with the wave of refugees. The prime minister announced that the country can only bear 2000 more refugees in order to not destabilise. Russia is cheering up for the though of destabilising Poland and recently Russian agents increased their activity taking advantage of the situation.

Given the above example, the Polish history (it was wiped out of map for 300 years by neighbouring countries, 2 world wars started in Poland) and the fact that Poland did not participate in destabilising Syria - can you give good reasons, why Poland should take on more refugees?

It's actually called being pragmatic but I'll settle for the label of hard hearted since that's what liberals equate pragmatism to.

You live in a country where the vast majority has access to transportation, electrically cooled and heated homes, a country where less than 30% of the population actually works physical labor anymore, and you're telling people that are looking for food and shelter for basic survival that you don't have the resources. Give me a break, that's not pragmatism, that's cold hard greed. You can wrap it up in a tortilla, or slap two pieces of bread on it, you can add all the condiments you want but at the end of the day if the main ingredient is still s**t, it's just a s**t sandwich however you slice it.

Yeah, like we're not already a haven for the world's refugees. When you're willing to take a family of refugees into your own home and do so then get back with me.

If the main ingredient is s**t, it’s a fajita de caquita. It rhymes!

Joke's on you, I have accepted others less fortunate into my house for periods of time. Why? Because it's the humane thing to do. Refugees specifically, no, we don't get many of those in southwest Colorado. If they were here, yeah I would share. That being said, I've let a homeless couple I knew very little about stay with me an extended period of time until they got their life together, and I've let numerous friends in tough times stay with me. Food, water, and shelter, those are the only necessities of life, anything outside of that is just a "want". The west has become so vain and egotistical it can't tell the difference between a "need" and "want" anymore.

Also, it doesn't surprise me you want to eat a s**t sandwich, I already assumed that was your meal of choice since it seems to be 90% of what comes out of your mouth.

Good for you. I've given permanent homes to two homeless dogs but I am not asking for a medal or equating it to what I was talking about. This is about refugees. Quite possibly people that have little more than a nodding acquaintance with a bar of soap from week to week.
When you move from the boondocks to an actual highly populated area where there ARE refugees get back with me. Until then you're just talking from your high horse.

Oooooh, I seem to be getting a little spike on my butthurt-o-meter and it's coming from your direction.

Lol, I'm not angry at all Raptor, you're the one that asked for 3 s**t sandwichs, I merely pointed out I'm not surprised that would be in your diet. Should I have added a smiley? Would that have made you feel better and more accepted?

As for high horse, please. I didn't ask for anything, you called me out and I answered that call. Be a man and step up your game already-- no use for the weak here.

Edit: eliminated previous quotes that created a "wall of text" effect, and adding a  here so everyone feels accepted and not personally affronted.

But it’s always more rewarding to be annoyingly childish on a forum like this. :jester:

You’re noble efforts are duly noted.
