If an average citizen had shot this man for reaching into his pocket he would easily be found guilty of homicide. Police should be held to higher standards, not lower standards. Police are in fact responsible for a great deal of homicides in this country.

No, actually in most states a legally armed citizen in a tense situation who has a person declare they are armed (which CAN be considered a threat if the circumstances align) and possible reach for a gun actually can be found for self defense for shooting "first" if that person was indeed armed.

The average citizen is not a person that is shot at traffic stops. The average citizen does not have an unofficial leftist jihad against his very uniform worn. The average citizen is not a likely to run into much less confront a criminal. Though Falcon Heights is an area you would find an average citizen living. It is a suburb.

MN shooting on the face of given details probably didn't have to happen. It was probably just a jumpy shooting because they declared the gun after he was reaching to unknown space. And permit to own is not automatic permit to carry. And open carry is different than concealed.

Officer Yanez is probably going to get Manslaughter.

Not sure how it escalated from arm shot to prevent reaching for gun to second shot in the chest...this is where it might become homicide. The officer who shot him is also a minority, btw. I don't think it was simply his being "just black" and not hearing the conversation leading up is critical.

Geez I think every citizen in the US should take gun courses even if they plan to never own one. To be informed on what really is one's "rights". Notice that very black guy in Dallas, open carrying his Ar slung over his shoulder, legally, calmly. He was detained and had to temporarily give up his firearm. He is also still alive. As a citizen he complied as soon as the s**t went down. No hysterics and rants to get his self shot. He will be retrieving his firearm and going on about his business in no time.

And btw MN event still does not make Alton a "victim" He WAS a thug. Armed felon resisting arrest after threatening a citizen with gun. History of violent convictions.

Yeah, but it's for the courts to decide, not the cops. Are we going to get rid of the judicial element and just leave trial, conviction and punishment to the police force?

I watched the video of the shooting.

First off, it's not actually clear from the video that he was reaching towards his gun.

Second of all, all the police really had to do was pin his arms to the ground and remove the gun themselves if they were worried about being shot at. What the video shows is either cowardice or malevolence. I don't want either type of officer in power.

To those that say the police were following procedure, that's the problem. The procedure is the problem. Not enough training in deescalation. I'm giving the cop the benefit of the doubt. When watching the video it would be easy to conclude that the cop is a stone-cold killer but I think really lousy awful training might actually be part of the problem.

The police in the U.S. are acting as judges. And no one is stopping them. Procedure is fine, but execution can't be hidden by words.

Think of Judge Dredd....

But was he in the commission of a sexual crime against a child when shot? No. He did a terrible thing in his past, but he paid for it, and should have been allowed to get on with his life, unless he reoffended.
And for the record, I wouldn't trust Breitbart as far as I can throw them.

I don't associate, either with thugs or praetors, consider them along the lines of opposing gangs, or protection rackets.
