Its just bunches of kids between about 11 and 23, give or take a few years, lurking about causing trouble and crime, and generally making life unpleasant for everyone.

This whole conversation is conjuring up images of the Clockwork Orange movie for me.

That's pretty much spot on how it works. Except that when Kubricks film was released it was considered shocking and a terrifying picture of a grim future that could never occur. Now it is a commonplace and everyday occurence here. This story is now officially old. There have been about 5 similar stories since, in the past week and none of them were front page news.

Us Americans have a disconcerting habit of being armed, so randomly attacking people carries a little more risk. Not that it doesn't still happen, but I've had a few late night confrontations with drunk and belligerent groups while working delivery. They lost a lot of their enthusiasm for confrontation when my jacket "accidentally" blew open (strong breeze tonight...).

Unfortunately british law seems canted more in favour of the criminal than the victim. Self defense of any sort is a minefield.

I wish you could swear on this board, because otherwise it's really hard to express my utter contempt of this cretin.

The court has previously been told how youngsters were taunting the 55-year-old Penwood man at Newbury railway station, throwing pennies for him to pick up and then standing on them.

Typical teenage bully idiocy...taking advantage of someone else if they are in some way more vounrable just for the sake of it.

It's sick.

The victim has it.

Random violence in public places is sorta like tradition in Britain unfortunately. crap like this happens everyday all the time.

My brother, who lives in New Jersey, was just telling me horror stories about gangs in his neighborhood who, for initiation into the gang, have to shoot someone. Preferably an innocent bystander. An elderly or handicapped person, gets extra points.

The sad thing about that.. and the difference from THIS event is that at least gang initiation is a purpose.. there is a point to the killing, however stupid or brutal it might seem. Here, its just brutality for brutalities sake.
