I'm talking about social change not evolution which is a biological change in the inherited traits of population. Social change/attitude is constantly changing and progressing whether bad or good. Not all countries have the availability for vaccines or surguries or cures. The social construction of some countries is still way behind in that regard. Hell some even marry off children who are too young to concieve.

Not sure what your arguement is about.

O...kay. Clearly, this guy is an idiot. I hate it when people do that...

"Everybody! Everybody!! Look, sorry - there's no more evolution left. It's all gone. Run out."

"How d'ya figure, sports fan?"

'Well, I read in somebody else's work that genetic damage can occur when people age, and I thoughts to meself, well, wow. All these young people I done see walking about with kids - must mean that they don't pass on that damage!! Considering that is, because I'm to lazy and inept to bother looking closely, the only real thing that affects evolution, it must be gone! Ah, well."

Friggin' amateurs with degrees.... y'see, this, this here - that's why I am an independent.

You're Canadian. The difference? Well, of the two statements made - mine is the only one that is correct, "gramps".
Quit making wild, completely innacurate guesses about my age, will you? It's starting to creep me out.

Ishmael, how old are you, actually? Just curious, not making a point or anything.

20. I forget sometimes, to be honest. It rarely is an issue, and - to me - petty things like calendar dates mean nothing. Whenever I have paperwork, I always have to double check my date of birth.

Gettin' old. You should put it off another 10 years and prove Steve Jones wrong.

Steve Jones? That's a new one to me. Who is he?

No wonder I forgot that.

Wasn't there some guy in the 19th century who said "Everything that can be invented has been invented"? That's what this reminds me of.

The thing about evolution is that it takes thousands or even millions of years for any significant changes to be produced. So you can't really say that it's "over."

There was someone who said that in the days of the Roman Empire. But there was also a guy running the patent office who quit for such a reason shortly before Edison started inventing stuff.

I do not know about leader in genetics; I'd find leader in quackery easier to swallow based on the quoted text.

Because of something that effects a minority of the species, evolution has halted for the entire species. The something is a drop off in variation caused by a reduction in the mutations caused by older men biologically fathering off-spring.

Steve Jones will argue that evolution has 3 components, he will ignore the chronological aspects of evolution because that might entail people thinking about punctuated equilibrium, and widely known concepts such as 'evolutionarily stable trait', concepts which make clear that temporary stability is not inconsistent with evolutionary process. Variability will be glossed over as 'mutation' as though once variation exists, its origin is more important than its function.

Jones wishes to argue that because mutation rates have been reduced, this inhibits evolution, although he is less than explicit in stating that if it does, it only does so by reducing variability. Perhaps Jones is reticent about the latter detail because he also wishes to argue that because natural selection currently is not inhibiting variability to the same extent it has done in times past, that this also inhibits evolution.

Jones also wishes to argue that evolution is now inhibited because there is less random loss of genetic material, returning to an argument premised on less variation increasing evolution (contrary to the primary argument that less variability is decreasing evolution). Despite being an alleged 'leader' in genetics, Jones does not give any consideration in this argument strand to the evolutionary significance of 'increased shuffling' and admixture between previously relatively discreet populations.

Or if you prefer the short version, Jones is full of crap, and I doubt he does not know it.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Humans are a virus on this planet. I don't know any animal who so selfishly breeds out of control because they think they have some "right" to.

For every other human that is born, that takes away more resources, natural and otherwise, from those who already exist.

Continuing to have children in this day and age just because you want to is the ultimate act of selfishness.

mm I thought notions of male menopause were just speculation, but Jones seems to feel they're proven. It stands to reason that if female eggs deteriorate in quality with age, then so must sperm.

I read something a while back that said that the older the father is, the more likely his child will have Down's Syndrome.
