Well, Lightwave and Maya (Maya particularly) are professional-grade modeling programs. I don't have that kinda money...
I actually use Wings 3d, 'cause it's free...and fairly easy.
I use Blender mainly for 2 things; making greebles and nurnies (fiddly bits on models), and converting file formats (dxf to obj, etc).
Blender is a free open-source modeling program. It's designed by committee, and has about 20 menus, sub-menus, etc. It works best with keyboard commands (as I understand it). It's a sort of 'swiss-army-knife' approach to modeling; it does modeling, animation, texture mapping, game pieces, and on and on...
