Palace guard loses his cool
Ceremonial duty is just part of the discipline of being in these regiments.
I still think the ceremonials should be junked. All they are there for is to be leered at by dumb tourists and to put on shows for those tourists. As I noted, the Spaniards have no ceremonial police, and tourists to Spain tend to take the visible security around such buildings as the Palacio much more seriously. Then again Spain had a big interregnum from 1939 to 1975 where there was no monarchy, so when it was reinstated, much of the traditional pomp was not, by choice.
The only other real monarchs in Europe are in the Low Countries like the Netherlands and Belgium, and in Scandinavia. The people there have little respect for doing things "just because", so those kings (and queen, in the Netherlands) have little or no ceremonial forces from what I'm aware. It is the UK that is the oddball here.
Continental monarchies tend to be much more respected by their people than Britain's version, where the royals seem to serve as mostly a big national joke, one from a Monty Python movie. It seems to me that Brits will profess love for the queen and then go on to trash the rest. It seems to me that once Elizabeth is gone, the monarchy-and possibly the union-will quickly dissipate.
The good news is that if the Queen Mum is any guide, that moment of truth may be a decade or two off. She was alert until very close to the end, and her daughter shows the same sprightliness. The Queen could pass the crown to William, who has largely escaped the royal sh*tstorm, which would make everything his problem. By the time he's old, Britain will be a Muslim country, one where the population cares little about ancient royal lineages.
Do those security guard do anything besides just stand there all day in that silly outfit? Are they forced to wear that silly hat for tourists to see? I don't see the point in the hat. Do they only guard the royal family home? Where does the royal family even get their money? I'm hoping British citizens aren't paying taxes to fund the royal family lifestyle. Does the royal family even do anything worthwhile?

Since 9-11 the US Capitol and the White House have been guarded by Marines, and they do not let tourists anywhere near them, they don't even do tours anymore, the tourists have to look at the buildings from raised bulletproof platforms a half mile away, and all purses are confiscated and all pockets emptied lest any terrorist think of drawing diagrams. Downtown Washington has so many barricades and blast walls it's more like Baghdad. Some people here may remember when President Clinton closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the WH a dozen years ago, and bicyclists and rollerbladers glided by past the WH fence. Well, NOBODY except the Marines are allowed there anymore.
Rumor is they've made it so that the Capitol-WH area could function as a Green Zone during mass chaos in the US, the politicians would bed down in the basement of the Capitol and food would be helicoptered in. Self-contained power and water supplies and everything. The UK needs to get serious about guarding the royals and can those guards in favor of REAL guards, soldiers in uniform with guns who mean business. The tourists tend to forget that those guys have a real job to do. With real Marines, I assume that mistake would not occur.
thje royal family doesnothing and has done nothing since the days of oliver cromwell, parliament does the talking and the queen just sits there and waves, she has no real power so she's not worth that much protection or as much as real royalty or the president.
we, the people, pay taxes which fund parliament and the royal family and in return they do f*ck all or try to destroy the country. as you can see i'm not the patriotic type, i say the people should have the power, not the pr*cs that try to take advantage.

most people think i'm a bit strange, even abnormal. normal is the majority, the average, what is most frequent. if you lived around here, you'll see the positive of not being normal
i'm by no means a royalist, but to say that the 'Firm' don't do anything; stop and think about the tourist revenue they attract, in fct even the dead ones attract tourist revenue.
i can't lay into our colonial cousins about their lack of appreciation about tradition as they have none to speak of so this would be a bit of a one sided debate.
with regard to the guardsman taking a punt at the tourist; the guy deserved it. He was taking the p*ss because he thought that the guard could do nothing, he guessed wrong.
these guys do a real job overseas ( and i don't want to enter into a debate about government policy) that most people wouldnot/could not do.
with troops being killed on a regular basis the tourists behaviour is offensive to families who have lost someone and must raise Q's with serving troops like, why bother?.
to make an analogy; if i went to NY and started sledging the NYFD as having been onto a good earner with regards 9/11 and OT payments, i don't expect i'd be standing up too long.
so i suggest people here stop their whining from the comfort of their desktops and pay a bit of due respect. if you can't do that have wit and sense to keep your opinins to yourself.

Could you explain some of the slang you are using. What does taking a punt and sledging supposed to suggest?
