The Sun: The World Is Ending In Ten Years
This predictions turned out to be faulty and food production in fact became more efficient. The prices of food have gone down. Famines are occurring less often in Africa as more African countries adopt better agricultural methods, and economic systems (this is not to say the situation is anything near perfect because it's not).
Ehrlich's predictions were fundamentally flawed in that they assumed that the world population would continue to increase at an exponential rate. Many Western countries are now actually facing a population implosion. Most of Europe is reproducing at a rate that will not sustain the current population. China and India's population control measures have slowed growth even further. Add to this that female fetuses are selectively aborted in both countries, so the next generation will not be able to reproduce appropriately. Africa has a number of endemic diseases that are culling that population. Ehrlich never took these exogenous factors into account...
because the oil-based corporations keep holding it back, by buying up patents, making certain plants illegal etc. I cant see them voluntarily stopping while theres stilldecades of fossil fuels left.
The USAs economic stability is also largely dependant on US$ hegemony, which is closely tied up in the international oil trade.
I do not think it is as conspiratorial as you make it out to be, but it is really a question whether the technology exists at the moment to make biofuels a reasonable option.

The reason many scientists dismiss sunspot activity as the primary force for global warming is because the cyclic influence is much less than the influence of the greenhouse gases in terms of radiative forcing.
Even though we know little about the cycles of sunspots, you can see how much more of an influence the gases on the left have over the solar variation on the right.
And just what high altitude survey instrumentation was available in 1750?
All that lot is inferences of inferences. and Science is only science when scientific method is followed. A person is not a scientist due to a lab coat or a can of alphabet soup following his name around. a scientist works within the methodological philosophy of science wherein a person may say anything, but until that statmnent is made open to falsification is remains a hypothesis, not a theory. and theory ain't fact until is is tested by experimentation and replicated. and scientific fact stands only until a better one comes along.
FACT: a "scientist" who states that something IS, ain't a real scientist. Period.

Ah, yes. Do you like to read Karl Popper?

Sorry for the unscientific prose. Here is a link toward how there got the estimates of the parameters:http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/251.htm#6131
This is perhaps tangentially related to the topic at hand. I was in my first year as a university student when Ronald Reagan was first elected President of the USA. Someone I knew at university dropped out not long after Reagan was inaugurated; he seriously believed that Reagan would provoke a confrontation with the USSR that would escalate into a nuclear war, and so he felt that there was no point in continuing his studies when we'd all be fried in a nuclear holocaust within a few years...

Global Cool launched in London and LA today and is calling on one billion people to reduce their carbon emissions by just one tonne a year, for the next 10 years.
Boffins have found the climatic tipping point - when the climate becomes irreversibly damaged - can be turned back if global CO2 emissions are reduced by one billion tonnes a year.
Campaigners then hope cleaner, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, water and hydrogen would have been developed.
Big names including Leonardo Di Caprio, Orlando Bloom, KT Tunstall, Pink, The Killers, Razorlight and Josh Hartnett have thrown their weight behind the worldwide effort to beat climate change. (emphasis added)
(link added)
OMG! Not the global tipping point! That goodness the Leonardi di Caprio will save us! Hopefully he will help the U.S. sign the Kyoto protocol and gut our industry! Sure it can't actually prevent global warming but who cares let's go crazy with panic!
Bet you as soon as we are not distracted by solar flares we will be panicking over some other nonsensical idea.
So it doesn't matter the scientific community has complete consensus on the existence of global warming? I'm not saying the idea of a "Tipping Point" isn't sane I'm saying we know Global Warming is real as day.
A properly constructed hypothesis againist global warming has yet to constructed and proved. Oil companies are padding their asses. It's not unlike tobacco compaines covering up the effects of smoking.

When I was in the 4th grade, my science teacher told me by six years ago, we wouldn't be able to go outside without sunscreen, the air would be so polluted we would have to limit how long we spent outside, and that the United States would be a good bit smaller due to the melting of the polar caps.
The Terminator movie also said the world was going to end in like '96 by these robots we created kicking our asses.
Personally, I had more faith in Terminator, and still do.
Tell The Sun Elvis said hi when I saw him a few days ago.
Edit: I'd also like to add I always found it a bit presumptuous of the human race to think we could destroy something as old as the Earth in a time span of a century or so.
Destory the Earth? What a laughable concept!
This is changing the climate is something unfavorable to us.
Science makes bad predictions all the time.
But more often they are right, which everyone seems to forget.
Di Vinci predicted Helicopters and Tanks but was a "madman" in his time.
H.G. Wells saw the atom bomb coming 40 years before in The World Set Free.

One thing I have noticed is that no matter what the weather, people mutter 'bloody global warming'. Unusual amount of rain? 'global warming. Unusually cold? 'global warming' More storms than usual? 'global warming'
Makes me think of that scene in "Holy Grail" where the sun is jumping up and down, and a bloke says "Here now stop that ! !" The sun mutters, and walks off past the horizon. The bloke sums up by saying "Bloody weather ! !"
Global warming me arse ! !!

1. to Professor Pretorius: I haven't for some time. Thanx, I will pad on down to the library and pick up a book by Popper.
2. to all: "There are three kinds of lies; lies, damned lies, and statistics.
3. to all: no not at all are ALL scientists convinced of global warming (GW). The recent conference was specifically on "climate change". How many non believers do you suppose were involved? Roughly as many as there were witch loving pagans involved in determining just how the Roman Catholic Church would go about hunting witches and other heretics.
4. Read: "Forbidden Archeology" for insight on objective science in action.
5. Ever read of what objective scientists thought of and caused to happen to Wilhelm Reich, and to Imanul (sic!) Velikovsky? No matter who you think to be correct - shjould scientists have done what they did?
6. Most "scientists" have some sort of profession within the halls of "science". Very few undertand and embody the actual operative philosophy of Science.
7. didja know that Mendel gudged his data? Know how many "scientists" have? Its a big boatload.
8. Most "scientists" have great study within some narrow arc of "science" apparently few have studied the underlying principles of Science itself.
9. I have. and I love Science. It is the best route to the understanding and manipulation of physical reality that man has stumbled onto yet. But Science is not a genrator of truths handed down from G-d, if there even is a G-d. Science is always a method (scientific knowledge is not to be confused with science), and its truths are alyaws guesses. sometimes the best ones.
10. but just as religion may be used to ill purpose, so may be "science" and it is.
Let me for a min or so pretend to be atop an apple crate at speaker's corner, and become:
Reverend Nutbag! (THE EVIL PRIEST)
"People look around you! You can see it, the signs are all about! there is evil in our world, there is fear upon us. we all know that something is wrong. We can feel it in our bones.
"I tell you that there is a great doom upon us! this is not news to you, all the signs point to it. You have felt its approach. You know that I am right!
"These signs, these portents are correct; there is a doom upon us! The signs are a kindness to us. the signs are to alert us to the great and impending doom. the signs are a warning to us.
"For we have been living wrongly. You know it and so do you and so do I. We have been living lives that raise a stench to G-d him(her)self! Our actions have been calling the doom upon us, we have earned it.
"but the signs point to the doom. and we see it. and we can alter our lives. We can change out actions. We can live right, and G-d will respond. He will hold off on the doom. all we have to do is to change. We have to live right. and we know how to live right.
"And I will tell you how to live right. I am G-d's representative in these parts. I will tell you how to forstall the doom! Just live as i tell you, teach your children to live as i tell them, and send money to m,y minsitry so that i can continue and expand the good work! .. .
The witch doctor, the bishop, the imam, the "scientist", it is all the same. always a doom. always fear (a trance state that causes a person to take collective and physical action right now). there is always an opening for another evil priest.

Oh no nutbag, it's not like that at all ! ! The all-knowing scientists are trying to help us poor ignorant peasants who can't understand the complicated knowledge that the wonderful scientists do. We ought to grovel at their collective feet for allowing us to live another ten years or so, if we allow them to control all aspects of our pathetic peasant lives. Really, how wonderful of them, to lower themselves just to help us ! ! Why, it ought to bring a tear to yer eye ! !

Dear Professor, how could I have been so wrong! Truly I now can see the light, as you have lifted the veil of ignorance from my eyes, and thus have cast my delusions upon the flames of eternal truth! I will dutifully abdicate my personal ability and need to think to those of preternatural status. Oh! Oh, how I have sinned! can I ever be forgiven for my transgressions against my obvious superiors? Thank you for the much required chastisement! I am now and always, humbled.
Hey Prof. . . You are teriffic! Glad to make your acquaintance.
Rule Brittania!
no, I is yank, but really really love so many things from the Isles.
I am not interested in what the majority think if what the majority thinks doesn't make any sense. As is pointed out on this forum often enough, most people are not atheists but that does not make them right. To name two scientists that dissent from the popular view: Bjorn Lomborg (link), and Professor Richard S. Lindzen (link to Wall Street Journal Article) of M.I.T. Now, the environmentalist movement (especially in Europe) tries to smear any academic who dares to question the dominant view (they have even resorted to lawsuits).
Lindzen is only critical of the consensus and alarmists, not Global Warming in general. Bjorn Lomborg is not arguing that GW is a hoax, far from it. He just thinks that we are taking the wrong actions to respond to it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2004/12/12/do1202.xml&sSheet=/opinion/2004/12/12/ixop.html
