I would say Gorbachev was very much like De Klerk in South Africa.
Both were part of, and grew up in, their respective "systems."
Both knew the end was inevitable-----of Apartheid and the USSR.
Yes, Yeltsin was a drunk, and obviously had become mentally addled after suffering a stroke. But I still remember the gallant man with a head of white hair who stood up on that tank, and defied the coup meant to overthrow Gorbachev.
