According to which racial sterotypes?

Most people of Mexican ancestry have certain physical characteristics - dark skin and hair, and brown eyes. Most of then aren't going to be mistaken for Swedes or African Americans.

Do you think people with those traits might be born anywhere?

It's quite a leap to declare her as "Mexican".

They're born in specific regions. Regions where white nationalist racists generally want to keep people originating there from immigrating here. People like that crazy b*tch who tried running over that girl.

That's the other side of the coin of people who appear white.

Like this famous Mexican:

The Jamaican man is an exception, representing a minority in his country.
The Chinese girl is an Uyghur, an oppessed population hardly respected by their countrymen as being Chinese, and often don't see themselves as ethnic Chinese.

There are white Mexicans, but they are a distinct minority. Most Mexicans - who the right wants to keep out of this country - are dark. That crazy harpy wouldn't have tried running over who I think is Louis C.K, as she would have thought him another white, Anglo-Saxon American.

Because the misicule number of people who remain here need to be told that trump white trump followers republicans conservatives right wing etc are racists on a daily basis.

I never said she was representative of all Republicans or all Trump voters. But it's denying reality to say that there aren't people who are taking Trump's Anti-Latino statements to heart.

The perp was probably anti-Mexican well before Trump became a prominent political figure.

This needs to be publicized because she hit this girl with a car because she THOUGHT she was Mexican.

The girl is quite possibly a person of mixed Amerindian and European ancestry, no matter what country she, or her parents, comes from. The majority of Mexicans happen to be of mixed Amerindian and European ancestry.

Trump has made it increasingly acceptable to be rascist against Mexicans. Anyone can see that, even those of us with no particular interest in US politics.
However frustrated Ezra gets at all the Trump-bashing, the man's not completely innocent in this, is he?

Trump certainly doesn’t foster racial-ethnic tolerance.

But he shouldn’t be directly blamed for what happened to the girl.

The blame should be placed squarely upon the perp-woman.

Trump needs to be voted out of office. In order for this to happen, we have to stop creating conditions for martyrdom for Trump.

Just in case anyone is more interested in the victim than in the alleged inspiration for the incident, the 14-year old girl was walking to a basketball game at Indian Hills Junior High when a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk, ran over her and left the scene.  The girl was able to return to school one week after the incident.

As for the driver, she is being charged with attempted murder, assault, theft, consumption, intoxication and possession of illegal substances.  She could still face hate crime charges, and is being held in jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.

It doesn't matter what the girl looks like -- saying, "Well, she looks Mexican" seems a lot like saying, "Well, she asked for it" -- so stop blaming the victim.

That's what the perpetrator said. She ran the girl over because she was Mexican. That is the whole basis for this thread.

Since this is publicized, I am sure she'll get a stiffer sentence than is normally meted out for this sort of crime--especially if the media continues to care about the case. I would say at least a few years in prison, if not more, even if there's some sort of plea bargain. If she cops to a misdemeanor, I would be shocked. Though this could happen if this isn't publicized, and she agrees to some sort of in-patient "program."

My concern is for how this girl will be traumatized. The perpetrator could rot in hell for all I care.

No, regardless of what the perp said, she only THOUGHT the 14-year old girl was Mexican, and since the family is requesting privacy from the press, we may never know because...

... THE REAL RACE OF THE VICTIM DOES NOT MATTER!!

People should stop questioning the race of the victim and focus instead on the racism of the criminal, who is a repeat offender charged with attempted murder.

Isn't that what we're doing? Emphasizing the racism of the perpetrator?

I am all for privacy for the victim and her family. Obviously. I hope the media leaves the family alone.

I do hope the media does follow up on this case, though. Owing to the fact that, in reality, perps receive less punishment in less-publicized cases than otherwise. That she might even, somehow, be found "not guilty by reason of insanity" or something like that, and placed into a cushy mental hospital rather than in prison. Or, if she's on drugs, she might get a lesser sentence in exchange for being placed in a drug treatment program/facility.

If this case isn't publicized, she probably wouldn't ultimately be charged with a "hate crime"----because it's too much hassle for the prosecutors. If she's charged with a "hate crime," her sentence will be stiffer. Routinely, crimes prosecuted as "hate crimes" are reduced to "non-hate crime" status in my jurisdiction.

I work for the courts. I know this for a fact.

You do not work for the courts in Iowa.  It's a different system, with different emphasis on different crimes.

I've heard that the worst thing you can do in Hawaii is to target tourists.
