My bolding above. I agree. Many of us just want to be alone. I, for one, will go into places no other people go, just to get away from people. But the great professional adventurers and amateur vacationers now have invaded all the pristine people. The professionals want to be "the first to descend XYZ River." Or climb this mountain. Or walk across the ice to...wherever. And then, once they have done it, other professionals take total couch potatoes there. Anyone with money to burn can climb Everest now. It is packed with people.

One of the charming things about Sweden is that a lot of it outside the main cities is quite rural and thinly populated. The town from which I started my canoe trip consisted of not more than, say 5-10 small charming houses. Roads are paved, but narrow and winding and quite beautiful.

Sweden is a very tolerant country. Very few people are religious, and there are very strict hate speech laws.

I can understand wanting to leave the US but Sweden seems a strange choice to me.

I was in France, in a University program for students of French in the 70s before Mitterand became President. At one point, an instructor who was active in the Socialist party brought a friend of his who was a party official for us to ask questions. My question for him was about Sweden. It was clear from his response that he saw Sweden as a wonderful example of how a country should be governed.

But nowadays, all it seems that we hear from Sweden is right-wing ranting and Europe's most naïve response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the dreary climate, the traditionally poor mental health of the population, and well-known animosity to foreigners, I don't know why anybody would voluntarily immigrate there.

Having spent only a little time in the former and none in the latter (although I was once briefly in Copenhagen so I guess I was sort of close) it's my impression that Sweden is simply "bleaker" than (Western) Washington as well as DAMN cold in the Winter. If you're not used to that climate you could be in for a rude awakening. I suppose if you get wrecked every day it might help, but I suspect that would also be DAMNED expensive compared to the US, probably 90% tax (unless you obtain it illegally which will probably get you deported if caught).

50% of our deaths were due to our failure to keep the virus out of elder care homes, a further 25% were from Somali and ME immigrants that live in multigenerational households (i.e. lots of people in confined spaces). Of the remaining dead, people dying WITH Covid-19 have been registered as dying FROM Covid-19 even in cases where it clearly wasn't the case. As it turns out, our death toll hasn't been significantly greater than other European nations, despite our not issuing a lockdown.

And our "animosity to immigrants" comes from the problems of accepting a massive number of immigrants without the structures in place to actually handle that number. Our government tends to be sh***y like that.
