President Cotton.
It sounds just awful.

Today I have heard that using some criteria, Biden's poll rating is worse than Trump's.
Depending on who the republicans choose (please not trump, ffs) the GOP might be a run in, in the next election.
Too far down the road to take these predictions too serious at this stage, of course. 8)

Wait and see.
All we can do anyway.

Yes there's no other option except sanctions. I understand some governments are sending aid to the Ukrainians.

The question is, who's going to suffer the most from more sanctions. Common people have already been experiencing increasing economic suffering due to Covid.

So, you are saying do nothing, Mr Chamberlain?

There is no dishonor in seeking terms with an enemy you have no chance of beating. What exactly would Zelenskyy do if he "put his spine" into this decision? Order all civilians and military to fight until there is nothing left to defend? Ukraine will lose. Anyone with half a brain can see that. Defiance will only prolong the suffering of the people of Ukraine.

The dishonor stems from the fact he changed his tune hours apart. He was defiant with his pleas to NATO right up until the last moment. He should have known it's a fight he has no chance of winning and should not have played chicken with the bus. His only option was to accept the given terms.

What should he have done now? Maybe it was another thread where I said he should have left the country and not try to arm the civilians to reduce casualties. No sense in sending people to die for a futile cause.

Good point.
I hope Rexi is ok emotionally.

Neither one of us is interested in politics in general so we don't ever talk about it, really.

As far as I know these events are not affecting her.

You would be mistaken to think that I like Putin. In fact, this bloodshed could ultimately lead to the end of his rule. While the Russian public largely supports the strategic efforts, the public does not support the armed solution.
There will be unrest once the news spread of the heavy casualties the Russian force has sustained.
The unverified figure in western media I have seen is a loss of about a dozen aircraft, around 600 vehicles, and 2800 servicemen so far. From what I understand the vehicle losses are largely due to the portable anti-armor missiles provided by NATO. The interesting fact you might not realize that although the Russians have a clear technology edge over Ukrainians, Ukrainian defense force between the enlisted and activated reservists actually outnumbers the incoming Russians at least 2 to 1.

I'm a leftie but I don't care about Putin's ambitions in former Soviet states like Ukraine. He's going to do it and nobody is going to stop him anyway. Putin sees (and he's partly right) Ukrainian nationalists as dangerous fascist milita.

Nobody cared or gave two hoots when the Burmese military Junta and so called nobel peace prize winners started genociding people in western and northern Burma. They just called it "anti-terrorism",.

Nobody cared when Saudi Arabia launched a massive attack on an "independent" country of Yemen killing unknown numbers of civilians.

There is a global/geopolitical double standard, Do I support Putin...no...but I wouldn't life a finger...no...not until the global community starts treating all people the same.

The war of Yemen started as a civil war; between their official government and the Iranian-backed Houthis; the Yemeni president/gov called the Saudis (and a coalition of 9 nations) for support. While the invasion is still wrong but your comparison is invalid.

Houthi’s official flag btw reads « Death to America, death to Israel, curse the Jews, victory for Islam » Just so you know.

I don't think Putin is an ideologue. He is a nationalist and using his authoritarian powers to expand Russia's borders in exactly the same way China is right now taking advantage of COVID19. He does not care about spreading communism. Neither does China.

It doesn’t matter his reasoning, there is plenty of evidence he actively works to disrupt and discredit Democratic nations and governments. Perhaps it’s as simple as part of maintaining his power being to make sure Democracy isn’t appealing to his own people. Regardless, the threat exists.

I take you point. But it's about the invasion and the death of Yemeni civilians rather than the merits of the Houthis. Using this logic then Israel is quite justified in bombing Palestinian civilians because HAMAS is so popular among the Palestinians.

These are his main priorities. Stay in power, make lots of money, make sure opposition is weak and maintain a tight grip on the Russian population.

I don't think he is actually trying to spread communism but he is likely trying to interfere in the stability of the US and the west to weaken us but he's hardly alone there is he. The Chinese and Pakistanis have been try to cyberhack the west for years, China trades with Australia but actively tries to hack into our government sites and steal data. They also try to interfere with our elections.

But about half of the Western world did actually justify Israel bombing for this reason.
And now some are doing the same regarding Ukraine because it has a some nazi party.

I sense, and hope, that Russia will get tired of the Ukrainian resistance, and desire a peaceful resolution. I sense that Ukraine might agree not to join NATO.

That's the best outcome for all parties
