You get your 'history' and opinions from Hollywood movies. I get my information from American authors and journalists who understand reality. Your denial after the Russiagate hoax ended shows I'm wasting my time.

Uh, no. I have a Bachelors degree in history. I think it's a fair assessment that the authors and journalists you've been reading hardly represent legitimate historical research and scholarship, and is the "tripe" of the racist far right.

To be honest you do not sound much like a historian. Your style of rhetoric does sound more like it is based on movies and spy novels and the like.

I thought this was dealt with in an old thread?

Johnson was a southerner and grew up referring to blacks as Negroes/"n****rs" so in historical context was a man of his time. He was also wanted African Americans to improve their lives and give them full civil rights, something the republicans were trying their best to block.

Mahatma Ghandi referred to Africans as "kafirs" a derogatory term that was commonly used in the early 20th century but he was an inspiration Martin Luther King who adopted Ghandi's "swaraj" and used non-violent protest very effectively to gain civil rights for African Americans.

I love it how liberals make the excuse "he was a man of his time". They do it about Churchill who was a war mongering, racist psycho. But they want us to remember Hitler is always here.

If Johnson had said "I’ll have those African Americans voting democratic for 200 years" it would not have been any better. His overall commentary indicated ulterior motives. Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.

Johnson did great things, though. And he used cajoling methods. And he really laid it in to the Southern congresspeople.

As far as I'm concerned, he's rather a hero----but sometimes an idiotic one.

The impact of hearing a southern white male use the n word in the 1960s was probably not the same as today. Remember this is the 1960s when even democrat voters still thought of blacks and Mexicans as seperate communities to "average Americans" so terms/names were probably common, at least behind closed doors.
