i'd like to see their 57% income tax rate on rich folk here. give them the choice, though, of donating similar amount to charity.

I have mentioned it before, but I have a daughter-in-law and a grandson living in Sweden. Yes, taxes are high. But look at the life you get for it. Not rich, but comfortable for most people. (Not counting the immigration situation, which is a different issue.) Yes, their government can get into trouble with some issues, and has in the past also, but so do most countries.

My son hated it there. He is a highly competitive person who wants to ride roughshod over everyone one else to be a success in business. He didn't like it because no one there valued all his accomplishments. He didn't like it that people were so nice and easy going.

My experience with Swedes has all been positive. Big contrast between Swedes and, say, the French! Of course, in France the food is much better.

I need sunshine and warmth. If it weren't for the extended winter and the dark, I would love to live in Sweden. If I live long enough and have lots of money , maybe I'll have a home on the beach in Costa Rica and a cabin by a lake in central Sweden.

He was convicted in the lowest court, but it was overturned on appeal. And it was a whole bunch more than just that. Åke Green is one of those fire-and-brimstone nutjob preachers. I think the phrasing was something along the line of "a cancerous growth on society" or something along those lines. Oh, and sticking swords into Pokémon plushies. In public. Because Pokémon are the devil, I guess.

Thanks to Covid 19, I don't think any country is eager to take anyone from anywhere else.

I would like to put in a word in defense of the French. I was reminded of this when I posted earlier about Sweden's past role as a Socialist role-model. The French instructor I mentioned was a really wonderful person. I was actually at his apartment at one point (I forget the reason but it was legitimate). Sadly one of his children had just died. Of course I have trouble with showing empathy and this made me a bit self-conscious, but the fact is that he was a wonderful person. I Googled him recently and learned he had quite an illustrious career. Had I any interpersonal skills I could have probably maintained lifelong contact with him. Anyway, there are some really obnoxious people in France and there are some quite wonderful people there. It's a big country with a big population. My view may be biased because I actually speak and understand French (although I was much better at it when younger). Being able to speak French helps tremendously when trying to get by there. French people can be very intense (I guess this is a huge difference compared to Sweden!) and sometimes it can be a challenge to deal with. They love to talk and they love to express opinions. They also have a dry sense of humor, and if your French is good enough to participate you can usually get by.

I had an especially good time visiting (mostly Southern) France in the early 80s. Most people seemed very friendly and eager to talk. I think the early 80s represented a high point in post-WWII French history. They had finally recovered from WWII and were much more confident as a nation than they'd been a decade earlier when I spent a semester there as a student. Sadly I think things have headed in the other direction since, but then I suspect the same could be said of Sweden.

I'd like to point out that Sweden is not and have never been Socialist.

Who would want U.S. citizens in the first place?

A good many nations do not immigration of ex-pats of any nation what are physically, mentally or developmentally disabled, mostly because they would be an excessive burden on THEIR health systems.

We need laws like that in the U.S.

Eh, free speech is more important. Since there was no actual incitement to violence, I'm glad he was released. But then again, that whole thing did prompt the Westboro Baptist Church (of all people) to set up Godhatessweden.com. Which was pretty funny.

Something called the Scandinavian model. Primarily Social-Democrat (not Democratic Socialist, that's a different thing)
A hybrid economy with high taxes, strong social safety nets, strong unions and workers rights, but still very much a capitalist system with strong individual rights and property rights.


And yes, we take english from 6 years of age, then start a third language at about 13-14.

I’m saying, from what I’ve read, any kind of disability disqualifies you from emigrating to another country, such as Canada, Australia, the EU countries, etc.
