Actually its been suggested that the vandals in question were displeased by the owner of the land upon which the tree grows. Edward James, one of the directors of Crown Currency Exchange, which became bankrupt recently, robbing hundreds of people of thousands of pounds. Pissed off PLENTY of people.
So they would target an irreplaceable landmark.

This is worse than what you have seen, because you can replace a car or a window for a building, this tree is irreplaceable.

Its not irreplaceable. Its not even the original, nor is it the only one. There are loads of "Holy" thorn trees on that land. The one they cut down was a planting from the mid fifties if memory serves. Yes, its cultural vandalism, but its not the end of the tree. I'm sure there is a re-birth metaphor just waiting to pop out of this.
