Independent Living Fund to be shut down by 2015
A fund which supports more than 21,000 people with severe disabilities is to be phased out by 2015. The £359m Independent Living Fund pays out an average of £300 a week, to help people pay for carers so they can live at home and not in a care home.

No mention of any alternative, so christ knows what people are supposed to do if they wish to stay out of care.

Fascists round up the disabled whilst Thatcherite politicians target them through economic means. The shared root is some kind of Nietzchean Social Darwinism

This really worries me. My dad is very old and frail now. He has 2 carers who come in every morning and evening to get him up and dressed and vice versa. He can't get up himself or wash himself or even feed himself. What's going to happen to him? A care home will kill him.

The best I can fathom is that the Government expect local authorities to take up the shortfall in this care. The same authorities who are suffering HUGE cuts in their budgets, front-loaded as well.

Its possible that Dave thinks that his "Big Society" will voluntarily care for these people. There are 150 volunteers in our local mental health trust, for one of the largest towns in the country. If the voluntary sector was capable of taking up this mantle then they would have done. Not to mention many of these services require specialist training or equipment. In a Dave New World volunteers don't NEED money to provide services that cost thousands of pounds, clearly.

Where are all the volunteers going to come from? Presumably once he's cut spending and sacked everyone they'll be expected to volunteer for their dole money. So the big society will just be the welfare state with everyone getting paid less.

We had a milder version of this nonsense in Canada in the '90s, dubbed the Great Canadian Slump by an economicst and naturally the media did not drum this expression into the common lexicon though the description was apt. What a depressing time... at one point, as part of the scheme, the plutocrats yelled at Moody's representatives for daring to publish the truth about Canada's debt, that it was no big deal, as they were bombarding the people with lies about a Debt Wall and comparing the country to Argentina and later to Mexico in the wake of the "Tequila Crisis" of late 1994. Eventually Moody's yielded to pressure and threatened the credit rating reduction as demanded. Imagine that - people plot to damage Canada by yelling at foreign bond rating agencies and they don't go to prison. They're traitors and they should have been identified and condemned in the media so they'd fear going out but naturally the media suppressed this very important story.

Oh, naturally the Great Canadian Slump is considered a Great Success. History has been rewritten to claim that the whole thing was a triumph. A triumph for the "people who count", perhaps, but not for the majority of people.
