Unless the unforeseen happens - -

The Sate of Washington will soon become the seventh state in the union to make gay marriage legal!

the usual suspects [bigoted hypocritical bible thumping bullies] are [again!] already collecting signatures for an anti-gay referendum this fall. i believe this time they will win. washington voters are in an ugly [read: republican landslide] mood this year. i sure hope i am wrong. :(

When your cousin's lonely... do 'em a favour.

When you're dog ain't got no body to love, show them the bone ring.

When you realize that one isn't enough, buy in bulk! Thanks Costco!

The trouble with the "floodgates" argument is that it doesn't address the issue at hand, but attempts to inflate the issue into something larger.

Extending the vote to men who didn't own property certainly paved the way to extending the vote to women, to aboriginals, and to people aged 18. But it didn't pave the way to extending the vote to children, or to non-citizens. But a floodgates argument against women's suffrage could certainly have posited, "What's next, voting rights for foreigners?"

The truth is that we evaluate each issue as it comes before us. That which was unthinkable a century, or even a decade ago becomes politically realistic. That which was politically leading edge a century ago is now an inviolable right. Will we legalize polygamy one day? Perhaps we will. But it won't be as a result of legalizing gay marriage today, it will be a result of people who want to legalize polygamy making the case and moving political opinions.

Incest and bestiality? I have trouble seeing legislative progress on those fronts. Bestiality is inherently non-consenual, and incest creates too much potential for abuse and coercive behaviour. They are substantively different from polygamy.

I wouldn't be too pessimistic. The liberal areas around Seattle and King County (correct me if I'm wrong, for I do not live in Washington) essentially swung the entire state toward approving that domestic partnerships law back in 2009. Perhaps the same thing will happen with same-sex marriage should it be put on the ballot?

A gay rights group actually miscalculated quite badly some years ago in this state and put gay marriage directly on the ballot, only to come up short in the election. Washington is surprisingly conservative outside of the major cities, and the entire Eastern half of the state is essentially rural with the voting habits to match. Hopefully they'll do better this time, I think the numbers have shifted towards acceptance since the last time this was on the ballot.

I think you've forgotten about Spokane, and the cluster of smaller cities around it, like my own Spokane Valley, as well as Hillyard, Millwood, and Mead - all of which might as well be parts of Spokane. It ought to be remembered that Obama actually carried Spokane, and there is an increasingly outspoken gay community here. I wouldn't count out Washington's east side regarding gay rights just yet.

Yep, and she had promised to sign when she had first pushed to legalize gay marriage in the state legislature.

And Washington Governor Christine Gregoire has just signed gay marriage into law, 2/13/12, just one day before Valentine's Day!
