Spam has risen 355 per cent on the typical social media account in the first half of 2013, according to a new study.
Social spam is quickly becoming a booming business.
As email clients get better at detecting and filtering spam, spammers are moving to social networks, where they have better chances of going undetected.
Spam is spreading on social networks so much that one in 200 social media posts is spam, and 5 per cent of all social media apps are spammy – meaning they promise a potentially useful service and then send spam updates instead.

The solution is simple. Don't do Twitter, Facebook, and the other major social network sites. I only do Wrong Planet, and I sometimes post comments to Dear Abby. Anyone I really want to contact outside of those two sites, I reach by way of email, snail mail, phone, or in person. I see no need for anything like Facebook, as email works great for online contact. I have no need to keep up with every little detail of other people's lives, or for them to keep up with all aspects of my life. I would find the first very time consuming and time wasting, and the second one very time consuming and invasive of my privacy. So drop the big social sites already, and just use special interest sites, like this one, and emails, too. ![]()
