Do you think that American Idol Judges are too mean? I know that Simon Cowell(sp) and company can be harsh to untalented contestants but do you think they have gone too far?

A couple of guys auditioned last week and Simon told one of the guys that he looked like a "bush monkey" or "bush baby" or something like that.

Another guy, who said he had AS, also auditioned and Simon attacked him about his weight.

Do you think that these guys were judged too harshly? Do you think that these guys were deliberately allowed to audition just so that they could be humiliated on national TV?

I do feel really bad for some of the auditioners, especially when they're cut-off mid-song. Having to listen to Simon's scathing comments wouldn't help at all--I swear, he does it only because Fox wants him to.

You haven't heard of The X Factor, Popstars and Pop Idol in Britain then? Cowell has been doing the same thing over here for years.

If they weren't mean, no one would watch it.

Simon is perfectly justified in being mean to the people who are just there to get on TV (i.e. a majority of the people who sing badly in the auditions) - after all, they're not even trying to sing well and they're just attention whores who are wasting his time. However, he shouldn't be so mean to people who actually try to sing well and he especially shouldn't make rude comments about people's appearances.

I don't think they are mean enough. If simon were three times as mean as he is now I still don't think he would be mean enough.

I think in many cases Simons' ire is misplaced... it's not necessarily that poor tone-deaf fools' fault he's up on stage trying and failing to sing... it's all the people that told him he can; all the people that said "Wow, you sing really well, you could go pro" instead of being straightforward and honest and telling them "No, I'm sorry, you really shouldn't be singing anywhere other than in the shower. You just don't have what it takes."
And with some people, you HAVE to be somewhat harsh because they'll (and their supporters) continue to delude themselves, justifying it with "Well, everyone has a few setbacks... I'll do better next time." I see this a lot on web-art sites like deviantart and elfwood... someone draws some lame-ass anime/manga-lookin' furry thing that's been done 5 billion times before, usually far better, and everyone supports them, saying 'Wow, I wish I could draw that well, you're really talented."
No. They're not. They're derivative and lame, and if they'd spent as much time actually learning to draw as they do sucking up unwarranted praise, THEN we might have something worth talking about.

No.

and I'm about equal to the personality level of Simon.

the fact that one day I'm gonna audition for the show, and tell Simon to shove it, is gonna be a good day.

No one should be watching the show in the first place.

It kills brain cells. Seriously. It was published in the June edition of Scientific Fact magazine. (shameless rip, and not entirely accurate I'm sure. Two points for anyone who recognizes it).

No, they're funny.

They tell it like it is, and some people can't cope with it. The fact is they're SH*T.

This guy was on the other day and his singing was so bad, and they were like get a career in entertaining not singing, and he comes out and swears and cries and says that singing is his futre.

I'm more likely to get a sex change than people would listen to his horrible voice.

Has anyone seen the episode of Robot Chicken where they spoof American Idol (here, it's called "Zombie Idol"), and the judges are Franken Berry, Boo Berry, and Count Chocula.

Count Chocula is the Simon of the group.

Tim

Meh, the entertainment industry is a real cut-throat competitive industry and you must either be good enough to impress executives and/or talent agents, or must have powerful connections to get into it. It does require having a strong character and ego to survive.

So if anything I think they're rather average, compare to the real aggressive nature that probably goes on in the industry. The judges (especially Simon in a extreme sense) are just doing their jobs, weeding out bad material that might not provide as much profit for the show (after all, if you have awful singers, you loose ratings and therefore sponsorship money could be withdrawn).

You'd think people who go to these auditions, would be aware of the high standards present and should expect to be scrutinized severely on every aspect.

I think they should be even meaner.

Whew! You all are a tough bunch of people. I'm surprised you feel that Simon should have been meaner. I especially thought that since one of the guys who was rejected had AS, you all would have felt that Simon was being mean. When I heard about the American Idol rejects on TV, I said to myself "I bet there is going to be an uproar on Wrongplanet.net". But I came to Wrongplanet.net and I saw that no uproar had occurred so I was surprised. I thought that everybody would be on here calling for Simon's head on a platter.
