I was shocked but not surprised to come across this. The most recent extinction were in 2006 - a species of Dolphin and a species of Rhinoceros are now no more. But check out the list!! !

It always saddens me when animals become extinct, especially when, these days, it is usually because of us.

Do you know what infuriates me more though? Knowing that things like Celebrity Big Brother or Paris Hilton seem to be far more important than letting people know what we are doing to the animal and plant kingdoms.

It makes me wonder how long the whooping cranes have been on the endangered species list here in Texas. There are almost 300 now. I heard that there were as little as five of them just a few years ago.

Also, the Attwater Prairie Chickens are almost on the brink of extinction, and they are only located in a small area about halfway between Houston and San Antonio.

Species extinction is depressing. Balancing the needs of humanity and needs to protect disappearing parts of the ecosystem often proves difficult, unfortunately, due to debates about how it is best to accomplish both.

In the 70s there was population awareness poster that showed people standing everywhere up to and part way into the oceans. All wildlife will be extinct or in zoos long before that happens. Support your local zoo.

One of the first things that they do when they put a species on the endangered list is to ban people from breeding them. That's why we have 50 million dogs in the U.S. and the ocelot is very nearly extinct.

It's just a really depressing topic... all of these beautiful animals disappearing forever because of us. It's not because of this issue alone, but I feel more and more every day that the world is falling apart into my lap.

They could also prosper because of us.

But for the most part we're like unknowing children, blitzing around like Bulls in a china shop, either not knowing and/or caring for what we destroy.

Or at least that's what most of humankind seems to be. It's going to take alot more than a few extinctions of a few obscure (but beautiful) species for most people to notice. Nope, it'll take the extinction of the Panda or the Tiger to really get people noticing.

And by that time, it'll be too late.

Animal rights people are actually getting different jurisdictions to force people to stop breeding tigers. they use every trick in the book, including kvetching that the animals aren't "pure." To me a tiger is a tiger.

Pandas would probably have a much better chance if private owners had started working with them way back when. I cannot emphasize enough the fact that animal rights activists target people who breed animals, and that breeding animals is the only known way to increase their numbers. Private owners simply increase the survival rate of the offspring.

It is impossible to tell if their extinction is due to us, but I think it is more than likely considering the footprint we place upon the world.

Humans keep saying that animals like wolves and big cats don't belong in human habitations, then way occupy every square inch of the planet. It's not that hard to work out.

The answer is to let them live with us. Every animal that lives with us prospers and exists in great numbers.
