Dalhousie University suspends dental students amid Facebook scandal - canoe link
Quote:
About two weeks ago, four Dalhousie University professors filed formal complaints about a Facebook group where soon-to-be-graduating students joked about drugging and raping their classmates.
The 13-member "Class of DDS 2015 Gentlemen" Facebook group, which has since been taken down, posted rape jokes next to pictures of women, some of them Dalhousie students.
The school said it would deal with the scandal via restorative justice, an informal and confidential process where victims and perpetrators sit down to work out their differences.

The Halifax university announced the fourth-year dental students have been restricted from attending "clinical activities" while they undergo a "restorative justice process."
A decision on the academic future of the suspended students lies with the faculty of dentistry's academic class standards committee.

So do you think they should be allowed to graduate?

No, I think they should be kicked out and barred from any medical practice which would allow them access and means to act on these 'jokes'. Anything less than that would open up the possibility that one of them will abuse their power once they have a degree and leave to practice.
If I had been running the academy, there wouldn't even be a question as to their intent, they made some very disgusting jokes, posted them on facebook, and in extension also posted pictures of women, presumably without their knowledge. That's gross misconduct in the least and possibly even a criminal act, depending on some things. No, they should be expelled and if they aren't, they'd better be grateful that someone actually felt sorry for them, and learn from the experience and actually let their balls drop instead of acting like immature morons.
Rant over

The Dalhousie University investigation comes one year after Saint Mary's University launched a probe of its own into sexual impropriety. That probe began after first-year students were seen in an online video reciting a pro-rape chant.
Dalhousie University probes misogynistic student 'Gentlemen's Club'
If someone were to post ... "let's go chloroform Sven X and assault him" on Facebook? ... they would be arrested for uttering threats. This is no different.
They objectified the women whose pictures they posted and casually threatened them under the guise of normal sexuality. Not okay. I think they should rethink their career path and be happy not to be in jail.

Precisely, totally agree.

A group of fourth-year female students from Dalhousie University's faculty of dentistry have written an open letter to the president of the school, saying they feel pressured to accept the restorative justice process to resolve the Facebook scandal that has rocked the school.
The women say in their letter that they "do not wish for the sexual harassment and discrimination perpetrated by members of our class to be dealt with through this restorative justice process."
"The university is pressuring us into this process, silencing our views, isolating us from our peers, and discouraging us from choosing to proceed formally," says the letter.
"This has perpetuated our experience of discrimination. This approach falls far below what we expected from you, and what we believe we deserve."
The women also say they are concerned about their future at the school.

This is rather common, unfortunately. Schools that try to 'resolve' conflicts like this internally aren't usually concerned with justice, more they're concerned with their image, so they silence victims and practically threaten them to keep them from taking legal action which would bring undue attention to the school itself. My advice to these women would be to seek legal action if they can, and subpoena the information of the case from the school.
