Earlier this evening, a reporter on Twitter broke the Treasury Department's embargo before the midnight announcement.

The Treasury Department at midnight will formally announce the redesign of the $10 note and launch the campaign to choose a woman to replace Alexander Hamilton (the founder of the U.S. monetary system and currency).

#TheNewTen is the hashtag for the campaign...

Who do you want to grace the newly redesigned U.S. $10?

His wife Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton
If not a founding father, then a founding mother
We should print them alongside each other, that way we can get a founding father and founding mother.
Otherwise we might as well replace George Washington with King George.

I know the person depicted cannot be currently living. Other than that, I wonder who it will be?

Wow I thought they would redo the twenty instead it will be the ten. I hope it will feature a portrait of the lovely Whitney Houston like I wanted.

Look at this: http://time.com/3925744/alexander-hamil ... -treasury/

Hamilton's descendants are boo hooing the decision to put a woman's image on the ten dollar bill. I cannot believe how these folks want to hold onto this stuff forever and ever and ever and never give anyone else a chance! Let go already!

It's so unbelievably sexist that they're removing a man from the 10 dollar bill and replacing him with a woman. What on earth is wrong with this country?

Actually that isn't entirely true.

A living person can be put on a denomination of U.S. currency if Congress approves and the president signs it.
Congress can also change that law...

To date only Calvin Coolidge is the only president and citizen of the U.S. to be depicted on a coin while being alive and president.

This coin above was minted to celebrate the sesquicentennial of U.S. independence in 1926, featuring sitting president Coolidge.

Hamilton ascended to the $10 note in 1929 along with Treasury Building when the current size small note was introduced.

The old $10 is below:

Which replaced this note:

The Treasury is considering producing two $10s, one with Hamilton and the other featuring a Woman.

Makes me wonder, at one point, if they will put a cannabis leaf on the back of one of the currencies.

Split the difference. Keep the same bill, but announce that Hamilton now identifies as female.

Hamilton was actually influential--the "bad cop" to Madison's "good cop" in promulgating the essence of the US Constitution.

He was disliked by many for his monarchial-type beliefs--but he deserves to be depicted as any Founding Father should be depicted.

He should replace someone on a very high-denominational bill.

Wouldn't it be something if the woman depicted will be Rosa Parks?

Or Dolly Madison, who saved the iconic portrait of George Washington when the british were burning the white house. Oh wait, she already has pastries named after her.

Or put Aaron Burr on it. After all, he won the dual against Hamilton.

Hamilton created the Whiskey tax. Somehow I feel the Kennedy's are behind getting him off the 10 dollar bill.
