Not sure how a state issued license plate has anything to do with free speech. You can still paint confederate flags all over your entire car. The license plate is state issued so it's still the government that is actually making the statement, even if you have multiple options to choose from.

I didn't read the whole article, but it appears these particular plates are optional ones that a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans would have been able to obtain, and not just issued to every person with a vehicle whether they wanted it or not.

I objected to a line in that article that claims:

"But in Texas, where the state venerates the Confederacy..."

That is bull crap in a teacup. The state does not "venerate the Confederacy." That sentence is an unfounded piece of fantasy. If anything, there is actually quite the sense of embarrassment today about the Confederacy. Only a small factor of people still carry devotion to the ideology, and those people are looked down upon by most other people as being sad cases of bigotry today.

It's a specialty licence plate for people wanting it, and if it had been approved most people would be be opting for the usual regular one, not this one.

Yet another "matter-of-factly" post..... I understand that you lived in Austin most of your adult life, but your post seems to want to speak for ALL of Texas----and, ALL Southerners, actually. I don't feel that "only a small factor of people still carry devotion to the ideology"----maybe only a small faction SHOW it, but----and, I most CERTAINLY don't feel "there is actually quite the sense of embarrassment today about the Confederacy"! I, my family, and most people with whom they associate----and, in fact, most Southerners I know----are very proud of being from the South, and would LOVE to fly the Confederate flag, if the country, IMO, wasn't so full of a bunch of PC-lovin' whiners!! I think some people who say that, might be doing so to present a "face" of "White Guilt"----and, IMO, THOSE people would be MORE looked-down, upon, by the people *I* know.

Also, regarding the use of the phrase "venerates the Confederacy": Assuming "venerate" is the problem, one of the meanings for that word, is "to honor something that is sacred or special"----the Confederacy IS special----as in, the SOUTH is special. I think most people use the words "South", and "Confederacy", interchangeably----I don't think that everyone who uses the word "Confederacy", is ONLY referring to "the slave era".

What does "white guilt" have to do with opposing the displaying of the Confederate flag on a car's plates? Those of us who are offended by it see the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism, slavery, and treason. Especially since this is being promoted by Sons Of Confederate Veterans, an organization known for racist Civil War revisionism, and who gleefully speaks of the day when the United States disintegrates, so they can finally have their own country again.

Kraichgauer, thank you -- voice of reason.

And CampinCat -- let me ask you something.

What the HELL is your problem with me?

You really f*****g seem to hate my guts don't you?

What have I ever done to you around here to earn your thinly veiled attacks on anything I say?

Let me tell you another thing.

You know NOTHING about the state of Texas -- at least I freaking lived there long enough to learn a few things, meet many, MANY Texans, and get the lay of the land.

And by the way, culturally Texas is considered to be part of the southwest, not "The South." But you just go ahead and keep on spouting "matter-of-factly" too. About stuff you know nothing about. YOU in fact are the person who is assuming you speak for "all the South" and that a state you are ignorant about is part of YOUR South. Wrong.

You're the one making up crap about me "speaking for the whole of the South" -- actually YOU'RE doing that.

Sure, I can't speak for the whole of Texas, but having lived there for half my f*****g life, I know more about the general zeitgeist there than YOU do, and at least THAT is a fact. I know enough to know that what I'm posting as my opinion of the lay of the land there is more accurate than your stereotyped bunch of crap.

Why should a WHITE person be offended by the Confederate flag? What did YOU have to do with "racism, slavery, and treason"? THAT'S "White Guilt", IMO.

I just don't think well of posts that come-across as "This is the fact", when it's not----it's your opinion.

Also, when I said "Yet another "matter-of-factly" post", I wasn't talking about another post like that, from YOU----I was making that comment because I've seen so many, lately, from LOTS of people.....

You really f*****g seem to hate my guts don't you?

Not-at-all! Actually, when I see your avatar, I always read what you have to say----and, often, agree with you. I wouldn't, maybe, say things the WAY you do----but, that doesn't negate their validity, IMO.

What have I ever done to you around here to earn your thinly veiled attacks on anything I say?

Nothing. I think, maybe, you're being sensitive cuz I've disagreed with you a couple of times, in the last couple of days?

Let me tell you another thing.

You know NOTHING about the state of Texas -- at least I freaking lived there long enough to learn a few things, meet many, MANY Texans, and get the lay of the land.

See, that right there, seems very matter-of-factly----how do you know what I do, and don't know, about Texas? My post was about Southerners, I KNOW----the only time I mentioned Texas, was in my statement acknowledging your having lived there. Maybe I should have started a new paragraph after that statement, to separate my sentiments.....

And by the way, culturally Texas is considered to be part of the southwest, not "The South."

IMO, it depends on who you talk to, down-there----and, in what part of Texas, they reside.....

But you just go ahead and keep on spouting "matter-of-factly" too. About stuff you know nothing about. YOU in fact are the person who is assuming you speak for "all the South" and that a state you are ignorant about is part of YOUR South. Wrong.

You're the one making up crap about me "speaking for the whole of the South" -- actually YOU'RE doing that.

No, I do not feel I am speaking for "all the South"----that's why I continually use terms, like: "IMO", "it seems", "maybe", "I think", etc. Those terms, IMO, tell people that I am posting my opinion----as opposed to, seemingly, posting "fact".

Sure, I can't speak for the whole of Texas, but having lived there for half my f*****g life, I know more about the general zeitgeist there than YOU do, and at least THAT is a fact.

It cannot be a "fact" when, again, you have no idea what I know about Texas.....

I know enough to know that what I'm posting as my opinion of the lay of the land there is more accurate than your stereotyped bunch of crap.

Yes, now I believe you're posting your opinion----because you said "I'm posting as my opinion"----however, there was nothing in the post, IMO, that I quoted, that said "this is my opinion". It "sounded" like "this is the way it is----this is a fact".....

Take care,

Cat

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! !
Rather than white guilt, it's a matter of keeping to the philosophy that America had been founded on - that is, that all people are of equal worth, and that no one should be beholden to anyone else. The Confederacy, and it's damn rag, were opposed to all that.

Ah yes; "white guilt".
I've never felt guilty for being white.I didn't own slaves in the antebellum era nor have I oppressed any of them since.
It's more of a compulsive drive for some people to subjugate others and to do away with things they feel are icky.

Yeah, it's not about white guilt. It's about being a decent human being with a resonable set of morals and ethics...

And, as someone who (pretty much) grew up in the south (SC, GA, MS, TN, AR...) and continues to live here, let me say, that flag is seen as a symbol of ignorance and it is a source of embarrassment for many southerners...

Although, I will say, most people who fly that flag aren't venomous racists. They're just backward, ignorant and silly.

Considering Lincoln, the great emancipator, was entirely racist, I don't think it holds much water to complain about racism with the Confederate states.

Slavery? Yeah. Rebellion? Yeah. Racism? Pretty much everyone was back then.
