In historic decision, Pentagon chief opens all jobs in combat units to women

This bit of history has not been noticed due to the San Bernadino terror attack

If it truly be equal, women must register with the Selective Service System. Currently they exempt from the Selective Service due to a 1981 SCOTUS ruling. Banning women from the pool of potential recruits is not rational, given the current roles women play in the US military. If the two sexes can fight and die together, they can register together in the Selective Service System. It is completely unfair that men only register with the Selective Service System. They also have to sign a waiver that they cannot have sexual relations while in service. If they do have sexual relations and a child is produced in the course of duty, both parties should be subject to disciplinary action or dishonorably discharged

I've known ex military folk in my family and they've told me having women on the frontline can be demoralizing to the men if they are either killed or captured...especially captured...

If they want to fight they must go through the same training this includes being eligible for Selective Service System. This is their chance to prove that they want to be "equals" to men.Women should be required to register for selective service. If there is sexual contact on the field , both parties should be subject to a court martial. Israel is a model for "universal conscription".

The Selective Service issue seems to be a somewhat moot point, as no one has been drafted in the US since 1973.

You still have to register if you want to get federal grants for college. It is also illegal if you do not register.

Try telling that to the Israelis.

It's gonna be a culture shock, combat arms is like a giant frat-house.

If they can handle it (without dropping the requirements at all) I see no reason why they couldn't fight. I am still concerned about the effects women will have on the males though. I could see cultural relations units and bastions or something like that, but I'm not too sure on things like infantry. I'm also concerned about what'll happen when that time of the month shows up.

We need some kind of experiment but human test subjects are illegal now...

As for the Selective Service, that's there for a "just in case" scenario. If you're a global leader, you can't afford to not have a military force somewhat ready anymore. I mean the Russians require it, we only ask for your name in a lottery now. We make up for it in technology but still, the more the merrier (at least in theory).

Women have already been performing infantry-type roles. Non-infantry could easily end up in guard-towers or out on patrol and those non-infantry units have had women for years. Women used to not be allowed awards combat awards because the paperwork would conflict with the rules.

Not to say things are always one-sided, women have been able to play off of male desperation to advance their career paths, there's a high male / female ratio in the military and I get the impression that people break the rules if they think they won't get caught.

This is why you set rules and regulations in regards to fraternization. If they engage in sexual relationship they face court martial.
