Van Dyke's attorney Daniel Herbert said his client feared for his life after police answered a call about a young man who was acting erratically. A Chicago police union official also told reporters soon after the incident that McDonald, who had PCP in his system at the time of his death and was holding a knife with a three-inch blade, lunged at the officer.

Prosecutors told the court the video clearly shows that McDonald was not advancing on Van Dyke, who started firing six seconds after he got out of his squad car. The shots were fired over 14 to 15 second period. During 13 of the 15 seconds, McDonald was on the ground, prosecutors said.

I have defended cops in the past (except in the Freddie Gray case), but I canNOT defend THIS!!

He was shot while he was lying-down on the ground..... What threat could he have been? Sure, someone could argue that he could've been bluffing and as soon as the officer walked-up to him, he could've jumped-up and stabbed AT him, but..... How could someone with a gun----a TRAINED someone----lose, against a KNIFE? As soon as the kid jumped-up, he would've been shot----he wouldn't have had a CHANCE to even lunge.

BTW, this incident took-place on Oct. 20th, 2014.

And 16 shots... sounds highly unnecessary.

That's what I originally meant to say, but I don't like the "kill" in "overkill" in this case.

Our police never practice deescalation and are very quick to shot, I remember in a similar circumstance here in Phoenix an officer rammed his car into an armed suspect who had a loaded gun and had just robbed a convenience store. Suspect survived, I feel like the cop in the dash cam could of very easily did this. This kid had a 3 inch blade? Give me a break, that's like a swiss army knife. These cops are cowards, 16 shots give me a break.

The cop has been charged with murder.

I hate how the news always writes "Black person killed by white person" when a white person kills a black person. Why do they always feel the need to bring up race?

I'm not sure about this movement. Before they came about, I was completely sympathetic to the innocent victims of police brutality. The police in my neighborhood are perfectly fine, but I saw beyond this and conceded that in many areas, they aren't. Even President Obama conceded that the police in Ferguson were engaging in wide scale persecution against the people living there. And, yet, I really don't like BLM. A lot of what they do seems irrational, such as their well publicized standoff with Sanders. They seem very divisive; almost calculatedly so.

Because we're rooting for the underdogs, but as soon as they unite into a political movement, they don't 'appear' that disenfranchised anymore, hence our sympathy wanes. You, know, they start to look like they can take care of themselves, even annoy us with their constant presence in the media, whereas the cops appear to be overwhelmed by an angry mob, while they were trying to do their job and keep the peace.
But thankfully, 16 bullets set the record straight again

Yes, but not so much in practice. If everyone's life mattered, then that young man would not have been shot in the back, then shot multiple times as he lay dying on the street. Unequal treatment by the police makes the call for Black Lives Matter a necessity. Whites rarely believe their lives are in danger from the police, while blacks have an altogether different experience.
