From Baltimore: Possible Government Attack Abated

A man in Baltimore County was walking-around saying he was gonna kill people; people called police. Police investigated and found guns and ammunition in his car, and that the man was not allowed to own firearms because of a previous charge. Police found threat in his car: "Keep track of targets = everything dead -- NSA, CIA, FBI, Secret Service, DOD, IRS, Social Security, NASA, State Department, White House, Maryland state attorney, House of Representatives, Navy." Police said they're fairly confident that there was no planned attack.

The man, a paranoid schizophrenic, was taken to a mental hospital; FBI and Secret Service are further investigating.

This seems, to me, to be another one for the "Why are people with mental health issues, slipping through the cracks?" argument----like Adam Lanza, the Colorado theatre shooter, and the Virginia Tech shooter.

You don't have to be a "nutter" to take on a Navy ship. You just have to be a dim, wanna-be, Somali "pirate" who does not know the difference between a freighter and a frigate.

And being dim is not necessarily the same thing as being insane (although attempting to take on a frigate from your home-made skiff might eminently qualify you for that label).

My mom is seriously mentally ill. She's been diagnosed as being bipolar, but she is often delusional as well. She was "kept track of" when she was younger and it was easy to get people committed. This changed sometime in the 80s, when she suddenly seemed to have a lot more rights and freedom than she used to.

The police and a local church where she lives are aware of her and check on her from time to time, but they can't really do anything until she commits a crime in front of other people willing to report it.

Many people with serious mental illnesses are afraid that they will have their freedom and choices taken away, so they avoid going to mental health professionals, they refuse to take their medicine, and they put a great deal of effort into appearing normal when they think people are watching. If people are trying so hard NOT to be helped, it's difficult for anyone to step in and help them.
