We keep dying in America, one shooting at a time. Mental illness, plus gun. Wannabe terrorist, plus gun. George Zimmerman, wannabe cop, plus gun. Trigger-happy cop, plus gun. Cop hater, ex-military, plus gun. Hater of gays, plus gun. A 4-year-old child, like the one sitting in the backseat of Philando Castile’s car, could figure this out. You wonder what this week will bring.

Lupica is obviously a gun opponent as my previously cited introductory quote makes obvious. But there's a lot more to the article, e.g.:

It's because if we really looked at violent crime in this country then it would paint a much more complex and challenging problem than simply 'gunz r bad' as most of the violence in this country is in our nation's poorest inner cities. Most Americans are safe from this violence since it only really effects a certain population in a very small geographic area, it's not the guns that are causing this and to imply it would make things better to ban guns is just plain wrong. Media sensationalism is a problem, they don't care too much one gang member shoots another gang member but when the story can be used to create a narrative they pound it into the ground.

People want to ban guns because gun violence is the only a visible manifestations of a deeper mental health problem. Being visible, it is readily identifiable. Being identifiable, it gets the blame. You cannot identify most mentally-ill people just by looking at them; but most people know what a gun looks like.

Make mental illness itself a more visible threat, and you would see more mentally-ill people rounded up for treatment, and less gun violence committed by mentally ill and emotionally unstable people.
