Boy committed despite having no mental health problems
When he came home three weeks later Jai didn't want to leave the house.
"Jai is pretty scared and little bit traumatised. Full of anxiety."
She didn't want him to be admitted but didn't have any say in the matter, she said.
Lende said a mental health worker had sent Jai to the hospital, but Taranaki DHB child psychiatrist Yariv Doran said he didn't know who had invoked the act.
But by the time a patient gets to the hospital they have been assessed by at least four people, Doran said.
"If anyone along the way thinks it's not justifiable it will stop, so if any client reaches our doorstep it means he or she has been seen by a few people before us and they are of the same agreement - this person needs to be assessed."
It had to be a massive crisis for the Mental Health Act to be invoked and an independent auditor assessed all patients admitted under the act on a daily basis, he said.
Lende said she had been trying to get help for Jai for more than three years.
"I guess this is what happens when you don't have help."
The day had started badly with Jai refusing to get into the van to go to school, she said.
"He just didn't want to comply with anything. I have been struggling quite a bit and the teacher who picked him up suggested I call the police."
In the past she had been advised to ring the police, so she could start a paper trail that might help her get some assistance, she said.
"So, the cops came and got him out of the house and into the school van."
Jai then sat in the corner of his classroom quite shaken up, she said. She thought he would have calmed down, but her son was taken to Te Puna Waiora, the mental health ward at Taranaki Base Hospital.

Unfortunately the mental health system here is rather draconian. It has had a lot of media coverage over the last few years and especially in the last month or two. Much funding by government has been drastically reduced but this is not just in the mental health field but the medical field as a whole. The politicians to a large extent are removed from the reality of what is happening in this country and rather than deal with it often make excuses, sweep it under the carpet or make some ridiculous excuse that everything is alright and that peoples perceptions are not true to the realities... I have experienced it first hand here when supposedly going through assessment. AHM ( adult mental health) Actually wrote that they were not willing to help due to the fact they had no support structure in place for those with aspergers/autism... What!?????? Once you are 18 then dont expect much help here! Was told i would have to pay out mu own pocket if i wished to get a ''proper diagnosis'' despite everyone i have seen mentioning that i am likely on the spectrum.. So when faced with having to deal with what i thought was an assessment but was instead sent around in a circle with individuals that had NO experience in this area which made it more frustrating when they create ideologies of oneself that couldn't be further from the truth! ...
It is in somewhat of a crisis here at the moment in many areas of politics and their decisions to close down establishments and reduce funding. It is a shame really as seeking help is very stressful but when one finally does seek the help you are sent along a conveyor belt of people with their own incorrect ideologies and egos that one cannot break through. They dont listen , everything is scripted. It is a complete shambles!! ! and actually makes a bad situation worse!
This includes an autistic individual holed up in a mental institution and the parents cannot do anything! It is the wrong environment for him and instead of aiding the individual it is setting him up for life long issues but yet no one does anything! It is all rather sickening.
This isn't the first story i have heard nor will it be the last unfortunately!
