How much of a problem with occular penetration are steel straws predicted to be? At least plastic ones bend easily.

I've managed to live without using a straw of any sort for decades!

I wonder how many disposable straws could be made, and disposed of, with the resources used to make and dispose of one of those. Like all modern things, it seems to need a battery, which I don't remember needing in the straws I used, but at least it doesn't to need a Wi-Fi connection. Or maybe that's in next year's model, when everyone will be expected to throw the old model away and buy the latest version!

Don't forget the periodic software updates.

I have a few metal straws stirrers around the house for the very rare occasions I need one - otherwise I find them completely useless but I don't drink any kind of soda.

There seems to be a whole fuss about straws lately, are there really people who can't live without them? :?

My daughter recently had jaw surgery. She was given a booklet "Dinner through a straw". She did have to eat only through a straw for 2 weeks. Beefsteak through a straw, yum .

I hope your daughter makes a fast recovery!

Many disabled people need straws.

But I believe the fuss over straws being eliminated is, what is next on the list? It starts resembling stories of dystopian societies where ordinary things are banned and outlawed, and the rest is regulated.

And the worst part is, if that really is actually happening, zillions of people will welcome it with open arms.

Look at it this way: you lose the freedom to drink from readily available disposable plastic straws, you gain a legitimate excuse to carry with you at all times a hollow steel rod with quite loose design parameters. I foresee a market for tactical and self-defense "drinking rods".

I have to agree with you there. I questioned earlier how much of a problem accidental stabbings would be.

In the 1980s, these sort of straws would not have been used in drinking. They would have been used for snorting a particular drug that my sister used to take back then. I wander how many will end up being used that way now.

Maybe, but a full length straw is too much. Gotta figure out how to cut it down to the right size.

But are they actually being outlawed? 8O

And why straws, how about plastic bottles, cutlery, bags etc? I've also seen reusable plastic straws - is the whole thing basically only about fast food places (as at home you can use whatever you want and I've never seen proper restaurants using them)?

Plastic straws have been partially banned in my county -

'Local Law 20-2019 requires that single-use beverage straws and stirrers are provided to consumers only upon request.'

Plastics Laws

A restaurant we go to has not been following the law yet. I keep reminding them of the law.

I thought plasic staws had been banned in Seattle. But the drink I got from a drive-through there the other day had a plastic straw.

The grocery and convenience stores where I live in Snohomish County (north of Seattle) only offer paper bags now. And you have to pay for them.
