Nine year old "genius" to graduate from University

"Soon, Laurent Simons, 9, of Belgium will become one of the youngest people in the world to graduate from a university. For this, his teachers and others have called him a genius".

"He studies electrical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands".

"He entered when he was 8 and is set to complete a three-year program in 10 months".

Sadly most who fit such description have great difficulty later in life. They burn out after a time, and/or don't know how to handle intellectual adversity when they finally encounter it. A few go on to be very successful (Terence Tao comes to mind), but most struggle.

Terence Tao is a UCLA math professor.

I don't think "math professor" is that smart of an occupation, because the amount of time that one must devote to it

The pay for UCLA math professors is terrible. (88k/year).

The time invested to get a PHD, and produce research is enormous.

So, the ROI (return on investment) is low.

Likely, his "genius" led him astray, and the time he devoted to math, would of been better spent on being tech CEO, or simply working in Silicon Valley.

First of all he was a Field Medalist winner the mathematical equivalent of a Nobel Prize winner at age 31. He made full tenured professor at 24. Second of all while money isn't the only kind of success UCLA pays him handsomely because he is top in his field. You can look up the salary of any California state employee.

Eindhoven BTW, is a town known for being an epicenter of ASD. Lots of nerds marrying nerds, raising nerdlings, and so a high diagnosis rate for the town. So the kid's in the right town to have people looking out for him.
