Any "repairs" the lungs may make on themselves are pointless after lung cancer has metastasized.

It's like being overweight.

If you lose the weight, you can be healthier.

However, will you?

That's old news, actually. But it's still good news. And thanks for posting it.

This has been known for a long time. At least 10 years, I would say. If not much more.

Even within a few days after stopping smoking, people start noticing that they are not so out of breath when they exert themselves.

I don't understand when people quit smoking and then decades later after being smoke free that long they develop lung cancer.

There's still a higher risk for lung cancer among people who are past smokers. But the risk goes way down after, say, 10 years of a smoke-free life.

Also: Second-hand smoke.

There is also COPD. Leonard Nimoy who played Spock on Star Trek quit smoking 30 years before he died from COPD. But apparently the damage remained and caught up with him. Then again he was 83 at the time and there are a lot of people who never smoked who don't live that long.
