Harry Tracy, the last old west desperado to capture national attention, was killed, trapped in a rye field by a posse in August 5th, 1902, in my own state of Washington. The killer of eight men having escaped two prisons, and the perpetrator of perhaps countless robberies, Tracy was hardly a hero, but certainly added to the history of my part of the country.

In fact there was, starring Bruce Dern, made in the early eighties. Called, Harry Tracy, or Harry Tracy, Desperado. It was full of historical inaccuracies.

hmmmm... so the movie's producers felt the original genuine story was insufficiently dramatic so they juiced it up, eh? reminds me a bit of how billy joel totally warped the history in his song "ballad of billy the kid."

I think they were trying to make Tracy into something of a hero, which he certainly was not.

i think they woulda ended up portraying him correctly had they cast somebody similar to kirk douglas [RIP] in the role.

That would have been an interesting choice.

so i am guessing that this was bruce dern's way of finally getting to play the good guy.

Probably the anti-hero is more of what his character was made out to be. I had actually seen Bruce Dern play some pretty nefarious characters before, such as in, The Cowboys.

he long had a reputation for playing only nefarious or psychologically warped characters, so this Tracy movie was his chance to play something different.
