PETA call to ban animal slurs like "pig" and "rat"

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wants humans to stop using animal words as “slurs” in what it says is a “speciesist” and “supremacist” use of language.

The activist group put out the unusual call on its Twitter account Tuesday, where it claimed that animal-related insults “degrade animals by applying negative human traits to certain species.”

PETA also offered a list of alternative words to use for insults such as “chicken,” “rat” and “pig.”

I can sort of see where they're coming from, it might make people think less of animals which might lead to them being treated worse. Then again, I don't think I've ever seen anyone picking on a sloth. I do sometimes wonder if PETA only exist to suggest nonsense and discredit actual animal rights activists.

Dear PETA,

When will you get the monkey off your back of censoring people? Quit acting like a bunch of b*****s in heat and stop acting like you're about to have a cow over what others say.

PETA should be mote concerned about all the animals that wind up dead in their hands.

That’s as dumb as a dodo bird.

Speciesism? Really? They don't have the capacity to understand that! (The animals I mean)

They're just going ape.

Once again PETA shoots its own raison d'etre in the foot.

By focussing on irrelevant niceties like using animal names as insults they're doing a disservice to a very valid cause. Such trifling complaints are a good example of why animal rights activists have bad names.

No more James Cagney movies. Also say goodbye to planet of the apes. Some of Charlton Heston scenes will have to be deleted. Or maybe they can [dub] it so it is acceptable and sanitized.

I think we should be as wise an owl and swift like a cheetah in incorporating these changes. Otherwise we will be as dead as a dodo.

This is a dog and pony show.

Why should we stop using these words? A pig doesn't know it's a pig and anyway, this would force my family to find another species to compare my table manners to.
