According to the Snopes website, the attribution is correct -- it was an ex-KGB agent who made the claim.

Around the first time Trump considered running for president, in 1987, and after visiting Moscow with his first wife Ivana, he purchased full-page ads in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Boston Globe, expressing perspectives similar to ones he later espoused while president -- namely disparaging key U.S. alliances aimed at holding Russian geopolitical power in check.

Trump’s comments from the past prompted wide speculation about his relationship with Russia, including boastful comments in which Trump appeared to be laboring under the impression that Russian President Vladimir Putin had taken favorable notice of him.  In 2013, before he was president, Trump was asked by an MSNBC journalist while in Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant whether he had a relationship with Putin, Trump stated:

"I do have a relationship and I can tell you that he’s very interested in what we’re doing here today.  He's probably very interested in what you and I are saying today, and I’m sure he’s going to be seeing it in some form."

While the book itself is only one source, judging by Mr. Trump's own actions and statements, the author's claims are not outrageous.

Nowadays it’s difficult to know who to trust. For instance who checks the fact checkers. Also mainstream media miss out things that they don’t want us to know about.
As for Trump, a few years or so, ago, I thought to myself, somebody has asked that narcissistic man to stand for president. I knew in my heart that Trump did not make this decision himself. I am not certain it was the Russians though, perhaps Freemasons much higher than the 33rd° that we know of. Perhaps the deep state, the unseen deep state. Someone from the date state said “hey Donald, how would you like to stand for president? you may not be popular and you’ll have to say what we tell you but it will be worth your while and it will feed your ego.

Now THAT is a conspiracy theory!

But you left out the hybrid lizard people, the Roman Catholic Church, the Israeli Knesset, and the Aztec Prophesy!

Lots of conspiracy Theorists are actually right wingers some of them peddling fake news to people who are curious about the World and I want to know the truth. Some of them even get paid by big tech to pedal these conspiracies. I am merely trying to think out of the box. Sorry for any nonsense words my iPad doesn’t understand my accent very well.

Someone of this personality (big ego, little critical thinking) is very easy to manipulate so I would be surprised if various groups (and Russians are quite adept in the trade) didn't try to influence him all the time.

Even if Russia sees Trump as an asset, it is in the context of Trump being a self-interested businessman who is happy to do a favor if it works to his own best interests -- and that includes staying out of jail!  And while there is no evidence that Trump knowingly associated with any Russian intelligence officers, it is most likely that Trump is Putin's "Friend with Benefits" rather than an intelligence asset.

 <Inset joke here disparaging Trump's alleged intelligence being used as an asset.>

If I was a Russian intelligence decision-maker, I would keep Trump totally unaware of his usefullness. Just plant a few agents (a beautiful lady could be useful) in his environment and make use of his long tongue and short brains.

Wonder how long this agent has left to live? We all know how keen the Russian government is to silence their defectors.

Snopes? You are kidding aren't you? Snopes is two people in a basement who are left-wing shills who are there only to "validate" the party line. May as well be invoking Alex Jones!

Calling us idiots for saying the election was stolen & turning around to complain that we stole it the next time is the definition of insanity inside out. Russia simply failed to foresee covid 19. If not for the virus they would have gotten what they wanted here.

Grand conspiracy ideology makes Trump supporters think real world espionage is a conspiracy & that fictional conspiracies will save little kids from satanic talk show hosts.

My roommate's dad was in the KGB. I think she would corroborate that they're into the long game.

To elaborate: Were it not for the Virus, there would have been no need for mail-in ballots, which are the preferred method of voting for the disabled, the elderly, and the minority people who generally vote Left.

Also, voting by mail means you do not have to show your ID, take a literacy test, or pay an exorbitant poll tax -- all methods used by the Far Right "vigilantes" to turn away the disabled, the elderly, and the minority people from walk-in voting sites.

The Virus provided the exact conditions necessary to prove that the Far Right Extremists (e.g., white male evangelical Republicans lacking college degrees) do NOT run this country anymore.
