BBC Live Updates

Quote:
President Putin has ordered his military command to put nuclear forces on a "special" state of alert.

This is after what Moscow calls "aggressive statements" by Nato countries.

Russia's leader had already issued a coded warning that he was willing to use nuclear weapons as he began his invasion of Ukraine.

Last week, he warned that "whoever tries to hinder us" would see consequences "you have never seen in your history".

These words were widely interpreted as signalling a threat to use nuclear weapons if the West stood in his way.

The very public shift to high alert status is a way for Moscow to send a warning. Moving to alert status is likely to make it easier to launch weapons more quickly. But it does not mean there is a current intent to use them.

Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world but also knows that Nato also has enough to destroy Russia if they were used.

But the aim is likely to try and deter Nato support for Ukraine by creating fears over how far he is willing to go and creating ambiguity over what kind of support for Ukraine he will consider to be too much.

pootin using the race nuclear card in a dummy spit. :lmao:

pootin has been humiliated and this sort of thing is the go-to for a narcissistic psychopath.
Poor baby.

A nuclear response is only going to happen if russia feels it is going to be attacked itself.
It is not going to be used offensively.
It is not going to be used on Ukraine.

If I am wrong, it's been nice knowing you.

A smidgen concerning, as readiness is what you watch for, and this is why Putin has telegraphed it, obviously as a warning, but the higher the level of readiness the higher the risks for all involved (far less steps needed to launch). There's no nuclear threat to Russia, no one is going to invade nor will this make anyone back down from sanctions/stop military aid, so Putin is just doing something entirely unnecessary here.

No idea what "special alert" entails for Russia, but I'm assuming it means live warheads are being mated to many weapons that are kept separate for safety concerns, weapons are being loaded onto strategic bombers and they're put on alert, road mobile launchers dispersing from their bases, SSBNs that aren't deployed but can will be put to sea, commanders will be able to launch without contact with Putin under some conditions and it also allows for a first strike if the order is given.

This might be the first time Russia has done this IMO (at least acknowledged it has).

And some guy told me in PPR that there were low chances Putin would think of using them.

No chance of pootin using nuclear weapons.
It is a bluff inspired by his humiliation. 8)

There's a chance based on mental instability when combined with a high level of readiness (along with unwavering support), but it'll still be [quite] low. Russia is basically the pariah of the world right now too, so it could be the simple actions of a narcissist to protect their ego when things didn't go as planned. I'm trying to figure out the reason/s here, as it's not going to change anything and he should know this. :? I suppose it'd be a good test of readiness, so it serves a dual purpose of a useless threat but also some training. Quite odd nonetheless.

What else to watch out for is a lack of backdoor channels regarding these things between Russia and the rest of the world, i.e., no backdoor talks to try to deescalate. This too can be a warning to the rest of the world, but it's a stupid one nonetheless.

I'll be a little worried with direct NATO and Russian confrontation though. (Which might tie into this heightened readiness if Putin expects this to happen, but hopefully not.)

In another statement, Putin allegedly tried to play the victim, rambling on about how his feelings were hurt that all these other countries were imposing sanctions and other restrictions against him and Russia, as if we needed further proof that he doesn't have a shred of humanity in him.

Of course, relying on an English translation of a statement passed from media to media means it's prudent to acknowledge that what I read this morning probably shouldn't be taken as verbatim, but if Putin did indeed say anything close to that, that's a new low for him. Yeah, let's not pretend that he isn't engaging in one of the most despicable acts in modern history, and that the blood of thousands of innocent people, including Russians, isn't on his hands; all of that because he only thinks of himself and his own expansionist desires.

Screw this guy (I actually want to drop an F-bomb here). There is one gesture he's entitled to and it's not a good one. Actually, I don't know the Ukrainian and/or Russian equivalent of said gesture. Do they take offense to the backwards peace sign like some Europeans do? If so, that's the one I'll go with, even though it's the middle finger in my region. As a roughly 1/4 Ukrainian, perhaps that region's equivalent is something I should know.

Well ok, I'll give you that one. He's still one of the last individuals on Earth who has any cause to be considered anything remotely resembling a victim.

As I recall, we are only assuming he meant nukes when he said worse than anything, etc. Perhaps he has something biological ready to go. Or chemical.

Or it could just be a bluff.
