I heard that there are Americans, who are high school students at least and not little kids, who think Alaska is an island because of the way it's shown on the map of the US without Canada and Mexico, so it's not that much worse.

I look forwards to the day Canada takes back Alaska and renames it Yukon Jr. :)

Who knows, this might have just been a freudian slip, revealing how Trump plans to placate Russian nationalists who want Alaska returned (and yes, they do).

In 1867 the Russian Czar saw the economic cost of maintaining Alaska as not viable. Hence it was sold for a bargain to the US (who at the time were economically and militarily weak following the US civil war).

It turned out to be one of the worst decisions (probably on par with the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) Russia ever made as Alaska was a treasure trove of gold, minerals, fisheries, timber and oil generating billions of dollars for the US.

Czar Nicholas unwittingly pawned the nation's biggest asset for virtually nothing and in the process helped enrich another empire that would become Russia's biggest enemy.
