Nine thousand miles from Washington, on the muddy banks of the Mekong River, a curious case of Trump fever is spreading. Government advisers and business leaders here have likened the U.S. president to God. Monks — highly revered in the Buddhist nation — have walked through the streets carrying his photo. Last month, the country’s prime minister nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Despite being one of the world’s staunchest China supporters, Cambodia is embracing President Donald Trump with a level of enthusiasm virtually unmatched in Asia.

“The Trump way of operating is something that the Cambodian leadership understands,” said Virak Ou, head of Future Forum, a Phnom Penh-based think tank, citing Trump’s disregard for democratic processes. “This is the kind of leader they recognize.”
