I heard a quote about this today. It went something like "I was honored with a medal for killing two men and discharged for loving one."

A soldier is a soldier is a soldier. Their orientation shouldn't matter.

"Sergeant, you got a lot a damn gall to ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug."

I love that song!

Glad that my daughter likes it too... she even heard him sing it in concert last year.
I'm also glad to know that my daughter supports gay marriage and I would figure gays in the military also.

I've always known the military has as diverse a population as the civilian world... can't understand why so many in uniform refuse to acknowledge that fact also....

THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN GAYS IN THE MILITARY! No harm has come to the poor defenseless heteros that I have ever seen or heard.

Ya, it certainly should not matter, but their lifestyle should not interfere with their professional duties, privatly they should be able to do whatever it is that they dont want.

Gay men are allowed in the Swiss military, and when was the last time Switzerland was invaded?

I think the reason for this action by the US Military is because sadly gay's have not been accepted socially and there afraid it will cause a lock of trust among the unit thus lowering the units effectivness.

Its sad - I agree

Bad idea, because they will get bullied and discriminated against by other personnel.

Not terribly dissimilar to the WWII attitude toward black soldiers - until Truman issued an order, as Commander in Chief, to integrate the services.

Oddly enough, none of the terrible things foreseen by the bigots came to pass...

"Don't ask, don't tell" was a bad idea in the first place.

It is certianly far from perfect, but it was better than having people investigated and thrown out for the slightest hint of gayness. It was a step forward in that it openly acknowledged that there *are* gay people in the military, and that they are capable of doing their jobs just fine.
