Coach Calhoun, As A Grandfather, Speaks To Need For Autism Awareness (The Day)

Mystic — Among the pantheon of excuses that kids give their parents to skip Sunday School, Stephen Coan's son had a winner.
Coan, president of Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, said his son told him, “I can go hear about God, or I can go to the aquarium and meet God.”
Divine visions aside, the younger Coan successfully convinced his father to let him attend a speech Sunday by coach Jim Calhoun, who has led the University of Connecticut men's basketball team to two NCAA championships.
Calling himself merely “a tall guy with a fun job,” Calhoun spoke at the aquarium to raise awareness of autism, a condition that affects two of his six grandchildren. His talk was part of an autism awareness day at the aquarium, with a percentage of all profits being donated to the group Autism Speaks through its New England chapter.
