Is any one on Wrong Planet observing the Day of Silence today?

Why don't we have something like this?

It is a movement/protest against homophobia and hate towards homosexuals. Look it up.

An entire day of silence?

I knew it; all those minute of silences every other day have finally added up. Another year or so and we'll never be able to speak again.

I read in a newspaper recently that some schools were organizing a Day of Silence and some "concerned" parents started complaining to schools and asking them to cancel it. Apparently, they didn't want their kids exposed to such "immorality", or whatever. After I read this, I was infuriated. It's not like all the kids in the school have to participate. I suppose if someone wanted to go out and do some gay-bashing, those "concerned" parents would be perfectly fine with it, but if you stand up against hatred and violence directed against an oppressed minority then they've got a problem with that. :x

I just had to rant about that, because it made me that mad.

Our school's Day of Silence was a couple of weeks ago. Is it perhaps different in Canada than in America?
Incidentally, I didn't observe it because ours fell on the exact same day as World Autism Day. I prioritized.

My mail isn't here yet today. Maybe that's why.

To be honest I'd like to be silent every day but I speak for the sake of my kid.

It was today in our school, in America. It didn't turn out well. At least 3 participants said that they couldn't talk after the teacher called on them. HELLO????? If you can't talk, you're not suppposed to say that!

I don't think that I can handle a whole day of silence.

also what would it be the day of no eye contact? lol anywho I do agree that the day of silence is a good idea GSA is the most influential student organized movement in my school they are the only club allowed to hold a dance

They had it our school today. There were less people doing it than usual, and those that did stuck duct tape across their mouths, which seemed overly dramatic, considering we've made it through about a decade without doing that.

I didn't do it. It's not that I don't support diversity and getting rid of homophobia, but to be honest, I see no point in being silent for the day. What's it going to accomplish? I doubt that too many people are moved by it. Besides, there are many, many groups who are supressed, some perhaps more so, and they don't get days of silence too.

Some of my friends did it today. I didn't, but I thought that it was pretty powerful. But on reflection, I bet most of the campus didn't even notice, even though my friends were standing there with black gags and a gay rights flag behind them.

People are so unobservant around here. :x

Wow, I didn't say anything that day by pure coincidence! I was home alone the whole day, and didn't talk to myself.
I hope it's on a different day next year, so I can bring it to New Zealand - it was a public holiday on Friday so it wouldn't have had much impact.

Is it supposed to be a symbolic action?
