A 31-year-old man killed his girlfriend on the Greek island of Santorini on Sunday, beheaded her, then fled in a patrol car, a local official said.

During the ensuing chase, the suspect was shot five times by police and ran over two women doctors who were riding a motorcycle before he was caught, the official said.

The suspect, Athanassios Arvanitis, a cook at a local restaurant, is undergoing surgery at an island hospital, said Chrysanthos Roussos, head of the Santorini district on the island.

Neighbours said Arvanitis beheaded his girlfriend's dog with a butcher knife following a heated argument, then killed and beheaded the woman.

The victim, 25-year-old Adamantia Karkali, worked as a teacher at a local village, Angelos Roussos, the mayor of Thira, the island's main town, was quoted as saying by TV station Antenna. Angelos and Chrysanthos Roussos are not related.

Initially, Arvanitis roamed the village of Vourvoulos exhibiting the woman's head, neighbours said. Townspeople said they locked themselves in their homes and called the police.

When a policeman tried to handcuff him, the suspect knifed the officer and flung the victim's head into a patrol car, Roussos said. The policeman was only slightly injured, police said.

Arvanitis then made off in a second patrol car and ran over the motorcycle before he was caught, Roussos said. One of the two doctors suffered multiple fractures. The other was uninjured.

As the police fired at Arvanitis to stop him, a stray bullet hit a woman bystander, injuring her slightly, police said.

A real dirtbag. What the hell is wrong with telling someone off and then leaving them?

well, obviously it is not going to settle well with the dumpee. One should always be as careful as possible when breaking off a relationship.

I don't know why, but him killing and beheading the dog pisses me off more than him killing and beheading his girlfriend... what kind of sick bastid does that to a dog?

I guess the same kind of sick bastid that does that to a woman...

The cop should get into trouble too. He should have done better than to let the guy take off like that. Now there are several more victims to the guys list because the cop didn't take the suspect down properly.

I'll bet the animals don't have that opinion.

Why beheading though? What is it about the act?

I know the barbarians used to do it a lot, cut off one's enemies head and stick it on a pole for all the village to see...and it was big in the 'dark ages'. What is the significance or appeal of removing a head from a body?

I was a cook and chef for 22 years, let me tell you, it is the easiest thing to do. Butchering a chicken or other food animal is easy if you know how. Try to cut off an arm or leg you gotta know how the joints work and how to bend them back in order to cut along the right way. Cutting off a head is almost simplicity in comparison. All you have to do is find where the vertabrae line up to the next one. . .and your done!
so that is how it is done, but not WHY.

It's probably because the face is (for non-prosopagnosics) the most identifiable part of a person. And also it's the only thing you can cut off from the main body that will absolutely make sure the person is dead instantly.

So displaying it was more symbolic of defeating that person than displaying an arm or a leg (which could be anybody's), and also more horrific for the family/friends/tribe/village/whatever of the victim I'm sure, to see that head there, probably with an awful expression on it. And also more obvious that the person had to be dead, and that it was that person absolutely.

What Merle said.

I have a strong visceral response to violence towards human beings in general. I have an even stronger and more visceral response to violence towards cats. Don't ask me why, I just do. I can't help it, it's not a sign that I hate humans, and I've been guilt-tripped about it enough in the past with awful scenarios where I was supposed to choose between saving a baby and saving a kitten in some imaginary scenario where there was only time to save one from death (and where just imagining the scenarios was absolutely horrific -- I have since heard that such scenarios in general, even when all about humans, tend to be built to reinforce stereotypes, often anti-disability ones, and feel more justified in hating those mind-games now than I even did at the time). Nobody's likely to ever change that response if it hasn't changed for twenty-seven years, and since it doesn't make me even slightly cruel to humans there's no point in trying to act like it's some sort of awful thing.

now there is the reaction I was looking for! Finally! I had a hunch that all that vigilante ideology was just a gamble on what the odds might be if someone had a gun on the bus and could stop the killing there with an educated shot with split second understanding of ricochet in the bus's interior. All this brouhaha about how trained people should be allowed to carry guns and stop people from murdering other folks is just because some people have a compulsion to take control of a situation and if the gamble looses. . well then, s**t happens!
