Cleared: Jury decides that threat of global warming justifies breaking the law

I'm not a believer in the "man made" global warming hysteria and find this downright scary. According to the ruling, "the ends justify the means." I bet lawyers are formulating new defenses as I type.

Does anyone else find this disturbing? What do y'all think?

Thanks

Agreed. as Ive said before......the world has been here for a long long long long long time. its survived worldwide floods, fires, magnetic reversal of the poles, Ice ages, cosmic bombardment from asteroid and solar flares and we as humans actually think that some aluminum cans and some plastic is going to harm the earth?? give me a break. humans have only been on this planet for a fraction of a second in astronomical terms and even then only been engaged in industry for what,,,,200 years or so? the world isnt going anywhere.....humans eventually will though.

There is nothing in that article which is not utterly totally grade A class one weapons grade f*****g stupid. This is an open door for every eco-terrorist a***hole to do whatever the hell they like, and claim that the damn environment is their excuse.
What sort of inbred bottom-dredging ecofascist bell-end would ever even consider "the environment" to be a legal defense against a crime? Why do these cretins think we all want to live in trees and smell of burnt wood? Do we really have to revert to some form of pre-medieval barter/farming system? (I would say Hunter-gatherer, but I imagine that "gathering" is eco-crime, and hunting tantamount to child-rape to these lunatics.) I'm sure it would be awesome and very karmic if we could all sit around some knackered lumps of granite in a field somewhere listening to the Levellers and getting stoned on herbs because herbs are always good for you. Outstanding.. except that we wont be listening to fuck-all without juice to run the radios and Mp3s, and frankly, the Levellers drive way too big a tour bus to be overly concerned about fossil fuel emissions. (They also demand a huge wage to sing about how much "The Man" oppresses us, I might add.)

We are already having an energy crisis because our government has failed to invest in future power-sources correctly, and are now hostage to the power suppliers of other sovereign nations. Are we to be driven even further into barbarism and savagery by these Gaia-warriors and their blatant disregard for human life?

Having said that, it is nice to see E.ON having to stump up cash, because they are huge thieving money-grubbing bastards of the highest order, whose only concern is to rape the public of every penny they can possibly get. Its just a shame it had to be these forest chumps making them do it.

Thank you im glad other people feel the same way i do :) .. even if we suffer from a massive climate change, it's not from car engines or plastic bottles..

by the way though that article is f*****g ridiculous... how can terrorism be okay.. could it be because that particular power plant didn't belong to the truly wealthy?.. there must be a hdden agenda behind the verdict.. :x

no.

those guys are f*****g awesome. also Orwell, this is far from Eco-terrorism. Eco-terrorism is firebombing McMansions in Exurbs and trashing SUVs. And to add on the ELF tries NOT to kill people in the course of their bombings, etc. Whether it's 'terrorism' or not is debatable, given one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter ;)

this is what they "damaged"

Quote:
Kingsnorth was the centre for mass protests by climate camp activists last month. Last year, three protesters managed to paint Gordon Brown's name on the plant's chimney. Their handi-work cost £35,000 to remove.

It's Greenpeace, not the ELF ELF would've sabotaged t more directly or blow it up.

It's still not nice to place all that crap in the environment given it IS NOT BIODEGRADABLE (Plastic) and it results in birds dying, etc.

Ozone in the lower atmosphere, formed from the reaction of exhausts and fumes with air contributes to respiratory problems.

What? The Proletariat rising up to finally say 'f**k you' to the rich who have been screwing them over all these years by dumping all that crap into the atmosphere, contributing to cancer and other illnesses, etc?

Seriously, for those who say that.

Go to China. See the air in Beijing and Shenzhen and other places that have heavy manufacturing presences. That's not good to breathe in, and assuming you're right about global warming it is not a good idea to pollute the rivers with sewage, the air with Carbon Monoxide, dioxide, etc. and the soil with mercury...

Are you trying to imply that the rich dump waste wholly to screw over the little man? Don't be so ridiculous.

For one, this isn't the Proletariat rising up against anything. Its just another bunch of jumped up w*kers wanting to tell us all how to run our lives. I seem to recall the last few times "The proletariat" rose up, they turned out to be a bunch of extremist tossers as much as any government they supplanted.

For two.. if "the rich" are screwing us, its not in some evil gloaty hand-rubbing attempt to poison the atmosphere so that only the rich can buy air. At best its a contemptuous and blatant attempt to separate us from our money, nothing more.

From the historical sources I've read, the air in most American industrial centers during the Gilded Age was just as bad. In some cases, like Pittsburgh where all the steel mills were, it may have been much worse. (One observer described 1880s Pittsburgh as "Hell with the lid taken off".) According to one story, the air in San Francisco in 1900 was one impenetrable cloud of black soot from coal burning that stretched from Vallejo to San Jose. It was so thick that not even the summer ocean winds could get rid of it. When the winds stopped, it got downright lethal.

Then there's the Death Dust of Delamar, Nevada, a now abandoned Gilded Age mining center. Since Delamar was in the middle of a desert, the ore crushing machines ran without water. This resulted in everything being coated with silica dust. People would breathe it, and their lungs would clog to the point that they stopped working, upon which the sufferer died. The actual number of Death Dust casualties was a secret, if it was ever tallied at all. The mine owners claimed ignorance. The local miners' union once published a figure of 300 dead, out of a population of maybe 10,000.

Meanwhile, in Marysville, California, the Feather River bed is higher than the town, thanks to Gilded Age hydraulic gold mining, where hillsides were literally hosed away, the gold extracted, and the tailings dumped in the rivers. The Sacramento River is still the color of mud from this crap. Did I mention Lake Lahontan in Nevada, where mercury dumped in the Carson River from silver mining 140 years ago still remains, and where a single catfish is deadly if you eat it from the mercury?

Out of all that, only a dozen families or so retain their wealth from the destruction of the Victorian environment in the US, and they don't have squat compared to say Warren Buffett. It's easy for a nation of office workers to get up on their Chinese made high horses and lecture China about the air in Beijing. That's further evidence that America has no attention span.

Yes, that IS their intent. They have said so. To them, any mass death from abandoning industrialism is justified, since those people should never have been born anyway. While I agree that there are too many people and that the ultimate solution will probably involve lots and lots of dead people, I'm not sure that forcing people to give up their lives is workable. Eventually, Nature will correct the overpopulation problem.

Nature, however, does not discriminate, so unlike the eco-freaks' plans, we won't get to choose who lives and who dies. That likely means that the eco-freaks get tossed overboard too. If the eco-freaks were really serious, they'd take their own lives first, but for some reason they don't. That of course is different from saying that there are too many people, and the blowback will be nasty. I think that ultimately, humanity will return to a pre-agricultural state.

"The Levellers" must be a British thing. Do they drive an old bus with psychedelic paint? Or are they more of the punk-anarchist persuasion, with ripped felt clothes and green hair? I suppose that they do heroin to reduce their carbon footprint via the lack of appetite caused by the dope, thus eliminating the need for farming? Or do they take a page from Al Gore and buy carbon credits from their own side business to offset their tour bus emissions? Hey, spew CO2 all you want, we can plant a tree in Bangladesh and everything will be cool!

Some good points made so far, I am not trying to step on anyone toes here.

I find it disturbing that those that want there voices heard, Eco Terrorists, find it easier to destroy than to create. This is the mindset that I have trouble understanding. And, when pressed to explain their position, these Eco Terrorists turn into class-envy radicals that spout anti-capitalism and anti-industrial slogans memorized the night before. So, in essence they use the environment to push their political agenda and really do not care much about the planet, only, how can they use the environment to better their political position.

This ruling shows to me how convoluted and twisted the facts have become. The NASA "expert" is a hack and he traveled on his own time, not NASA's time. This guy is a HACK, did I say that already, and has been pushing his warped "testimony" for anyone with a free plane ticket for years.

Now, I am a pretty easy going guy and when religion is involved I mostly abstain from discussions. But, when a small amount of people start prosyletizing their earthy religions and using the U.S. Govt. to do so then, I say "SHENANIGANS" and I start looking for my broom*.

* Southpark reference

One other note, statistically speaking ,more people die every year from the cold as opposed to the heat.

when we're talking about pollution i'd be more worried about dieing from disease then from the heat in general.. mind you i dont think pollution is heating the planet, so i wouldnt be worried period.

What, reducing the crap humans put into the atmosphere?

here's a graph correlating CO2 and Global Warming

Oh yes it was that bad-im aware of that. in London one time smog killed off a few thousand people in the 1800s

how so? I never denied the US was a heavy polluter-or still DOES pollute heavily. China still needs some scrubbers for its' factories or something-the US has made some steps in that direction at least (As weak and bad compared to say-Europe) Especially given, say the Ruhr area in Germany

at LEAST it's the part I bolded, it's not that but the economic (wage and debt) and arguably LITERAL enslavement of the world. See the BS Neoliberalism the WTO places to allow corporations to exploit the poor of those nations, US supporting those companies by hiring thugs to put down and socialist movements, etc

No. They did not. I disagree with the verdict, and your description of it. Painting a message on a building is not terrorism ... who did they terrorize? It was an act of graffitism, not terrorism. It should not be ignored or excused by the legal system, but no need to cry out that the sky is falling.

The idea of a a 'higher law' coming into play has precedents, but needs to be reserved for special cases - for example, if a person speeds while taking a bleeding person to the hospital where an ambulance cannot, the traffic law might be ignored or over-ruled by the concern for human life (depending on the circumstances of the speeding). But when this is routinely invoked to justify misbehavior by political activists, it becomes a challenge to the rule of law.

The idea of a 'higher law' was invoked by abolitionists running the underground railroad. It has been invoked by people who believe that abortion should be stopped by any means necessary.
